Arequipa is one of Peru's most beautiful cities, built almost entirely from white volcanic sillar stone that gives it the name 'the White City' and set beneath three towering volcanoes. Its UNESCO-listed colonial centre is a treasure of grand churches and mansions. On this walking tour a local guide reveals its beauty and history.
You will stand in the magnificent Plaza de Armas, admire the great cathedral and baroque churches, and approach the famous Santa Catalina Monastery. Stop 1 – Plaza de Armas: We meet on the grand white-stone main square.\nStop 2 – Arequipa Cathedral: The great cathedral along the plaza.\nStop 3 – La Compañía Church: The dazzling carved baroque church (from outside).\nStop 4 – The white-stone lanes: The colonial streets of sillar stone.\nStop 5 – Santa Catalina Monastery: The famous walled convent (from the entrance).\nStop 6 – San Lázaro quarter: The oldest neighbourhood of the city.\nStop 7 – Volcano viewpoint: We finish with views toward the three volcanoes.
