Bukhara is the most complete medieval city in Central Asia, a holy city of the Silk Road where more than two thousand years of history survive in a compact old town of mosques, madrasas and covered bazaars. Unlike other Silk Road cities, much of Bukhara has never been rebuilt. On this walking tour a local guide leads you through its living history.
You will gather at the tranquil Lyabi-Hauz pool, marvel at the great Kalyan Minaret that even Genghis Khan spared, and wander the ancient trading domes still full of craftsmen. Along the way you will hear about Sufi saints, emirs and Silk Road merchants. Atmospheric and timeless, Bukhara is a wonderful city to explore on foot.

Stop 1 – Lyabi-Hauz: We meet at the tranquil pool at the heart of the old city.
Stop 2 – The trading domes: The covered bazaars of the Silk Road merchants.
Stop 3 – Poi Kalyan & the Kalyan Minaret: The great minaret and mosque complex.
Stop 4 – The Mir-i-Arab Madrasa: The working religious school (from the square).
Stop 5 – The old mahalla lanes: The living medieval neighbourhoods.
Stop 6 – The Ark Fortress approach: The ancient citadel of the emirs of Bukhara.
Stop 7 – Silk Road viewpoint: We finish with the story of the holy city.
