Tour description

Nara was Japan's first permanent capital, and its ancient temples and shrines make it one of the most sacred and historic places in the country. Home to a colossal bronze Buddha and hundreds of free-roaming deer considered messengers of the gods, it is a UNESCO World Heritage treasure. On this walking tour a local guide brings its 1,300 years of history to life.

You will approach the mighty Todai-ji temple with its Great Buddha, walk lantern-lined paths to ancient shrines, and meet the famous bowing deer of Nara Park. Along the way you will hear the stories behind Japan's spiritual and imperial origins. Peaceful and profoundly historic, Nara is a wonderful place to explore on foot.
Meeting point:

Nara Park, near the Kofukuji five-storey pagoda, Nara
