Coimbra was Portugal's medieval capital and is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, a city where black-caped students still sing a mournful, romantic form of fado. Rising in tiers above the river Mondego, its old town is a labyrinth of steep lanes, ancient churches and scholarly tradition. On this walking tour a local guide brings its long history to life.\n\nYou will climb through the medieval quarter toward the historic university, hear about kings, scholars and student rituals, and learn what makes Coimbra's fado so different from Lisbon's. Atmospheric, romantic and steeped in learning, Coimbra is a city that lingers in the memory.
