Khiva is the most perfectly preserved Silk Road city in the world, a walled desert town whose entire old centre, the Itchan Kala, is a UNESCO World Heritage site that feels like an open-air museum. Once a notorious slave-trading khanate, today its turquoise-tiled minarets and mud-brick lanes are utterly enchanting. On this walking tour a local guide reveals its legends.
You will pass through the great gates in the city walls, marvel at the stumpy turquoise Kalta Minor minaret, and wander lanes of madrasas and palaces. Stop 1 – West Gate (Ata Darvaza): We meet at the gate in the mighty city walls.\nStop 2 – Kalta Minor Minaret: The famous stumpy turquoise-tiled minaret.\nStop 3 – The Kunya Ark: The old fortress-palace of the khans.\nStop 4 – The madrasas & lanes: The mud-brick religious schools and streets.\nStop 5 – Islam Khodja complex: The tall minaret towering over the old town.\nStop 6 – The old bazaars: The market lanes of the desert caravan city.\nStop 7 – City-wall viewpoint: We finish with a view over the walled old town.
