Tour description
Essaouira is a small walled port on the Atlantic, flat, whitewashed, blue-shuttered and permanently windy. Its medina is the easiest to walk in Morocco and its food is built on two things: what the blue boats bring in, and the argan trees that grow only in this corner of the world.
We start at the port in the morning, when the catch is auctioned - sardines by the crate, conger eel, sea bream, and the octopus that Essaouira exports across Europe. Your guide explains the auction system and the fleet.
Then the medina: a spice and olive souk where you taste argan oil next to amlou, the argan, almond and honey paste that Moroccans eat for breakfast; a communal oven; and a pastry house set around a courtyard that has been baking since the 1920s.
For the seafood we do not use the port grill stalls, for reasons we explain in the notes. We buy at the market and take it to an established medina kitchen, which is what locals do - grilled sardines with chermoula, calamari, and a tagine of fish with tomato and preserved lemon.
Small group, maximum 10 guests, entirely on foot and entirely flat.

Weitere Hinweise
Runs daily at 09:30. Morning is deliberate: the auction happens then, and Essaouira's afternoon wind makes outdoor eating unpleasant from about one o'clock.
On the port grill stalls, honestly: they are the town's most photographed food attraction and also its most complained-about. Visitors report quoted prices multiplying on the bill, fish sitting unrefrigerated in the sun, and staff turning aggressive when the bill is questioned. We do not use them. We buy at the market and take the fish to an established medina kitchen, which is what residents do, and we tell you the price before we buy.
Wind: Essaouira is windy year-round and hardest in the afternoons between April and August. Summer mornings often start with sea fog that burns off later. Bring a windproof layer whatever the season.
Ramadan: daytime service largely stops; we switch to an evening tour - ask us.
Water and hygiene: bottled water only. Seafood is the main risk category anywhere on this coast, which is why we are careful about where we buy.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. A vegetarian route through argan, olives, bread, salads and pastries is genuinely good here.
About 1.5 km of walking, flat and easy - the most accessible medina walk in Morocco.
