Tour description
At five in the afternoon the main street of Luang Prabang closes to traffic and a few hundred vendors unroll their stalls under red canopies. Tucked into a side lane off the handicraft strip is the food alley, where the town eats.
We start on the Mekong bank with a Beerlao as the sun goes down behind the far hills, which is the single best free thing in Laos. Then into the food alley: whole river fish stuffed with lemongrass and grilled in a bamboo clamp; Luang Prabang sausage; grilled pork skewers; and the vegetarian buffet where you pile a plate as high as physics allows for about a dollar - your guide will steer you to the freshly cooked end of it.
The centrepiece is laap, the Lao national dish: minced meat or fish tossed with toasted rice powder, mint, chilli and lime, eaten by hand with sticky rice. Your guide explains the difference between Lao and Thai laap and why the toasted rice matters. We finish with a Lao dessert and a walk back through the lanterns.
Small group, maximum 10 guests, entirely on foot.

Detailed itinerary

Stornierungsrichtlinie
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. Tours run rain or shine; the food alley is under canopy. We do not operate during Pi Mai Lao in mid-April.
Weitere Hinweise
Runs daily at 17:00. Luang Prabang closes early - most venues shut by about 23:00 and the town is quiet well before that, so we finish by 20:30.
Food safety: the night-market vegetarian buffet is the classic traveller's stomach risk because the trays sit at ambient temperature. We only take the freshly cooked items from it and we would rather you knew that than found out the hard way.
The main street is closed to vehicles from about 17:00 for the night market, which makes the whole route walkable.
Pi Mai Lao in mid-April closes the town for about a week. Boun Ok Phansa, usually in October, brings boat races and heavy riverfront crowds.
The bamboo footbridge across the Nam Khan is dismantled during the rainy season, roughly May to October, so any cross-river stop is dry-season only. This route stays on the peninsula and is unaffected.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian works well here.
Cash only, Lao kip. Entirely on foot, about 1.5 km.
