Tour description
Osaka's word for its own appetite is kuidaore - to eat yourself bankrupt - and Dotonbori is where the phrase gets its reputation. But the neon strip is only part of the story. This tour runs from the quiet stone lane behind it, out to the retro downtown of Shinsekai, and back.
We start in Hozenji Yokocho, a lantern-lit alley of tiny counters beside a temple where visitors throw water over a moss-covered statue. Then takoyaki, turned in the pan with a metal pick in front of you, and okonomiyaki cooked on the griddle at a Michelin Bib Gourmand shop that has been on Dotonbori since 1945 - cabbage, pork belly, grated yam, sauce and bonito flakes that move in the heat.
The second half is Shinsekai, built in 1912 as Osaka's vision of the future and now the most charmingly stuck-in-time district in Japan, where we eat kushikatsu at a counter that has been frying since 1929 and doteyaki, beef sinew simmered for hours in miso.
Small group, maximum 8 guests, with one short subway ride included.

Detailed itinerary
Stop 1 - Hozenji Yokocho: A stone-paved lantern lane behind the neon, with the moss-covered Fudo statue and your guide on the Osaka most visitors miss.
Stop 2 - Takoyaki: Octopus batter balls turned with a metal pick in front of you, served molten with sauce, mayonnaise and bonito flakes that curl in the steam.
Stop 3 - Okonomiyaki: The Osaka version, cabbage-heavy with grated yam and pork belly, cooked on a griddle at a Michelin Bib Gourmand shop trading since 1945.
Stop 4 - Dotonbori walk: A guided pass along the canal under the Glico sign, with your guide on merchant Osaka, kuidaore and which famous signs are worth your camera.
Stop 5 - Subway to Shinsekai: One short ride to Osaka's 1912 vision of the future, included in the price.
Stop 6 - Kushikatsu, Shinsekai: Crumbed and fried skewers at a counter frying since 1929. One dip in the shared sauce, never two, and your guide will make sure nobody embarrasses themselves.
Stop 7 - Doteyaki and a beer: Beef sinew simmered for hours in sweet miso, with a cold beer at a Janjan Yokocho counter to finish.

Stornierungsrichtlinie
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. Tours run rain or shine; Dotonbori and Kuromon are covered and Shinsekai is partly arcaded.
Weitere Hinweise
Runs daily at 18:00.
Minimum age 12. Guests under 20 are served soft drinks.
Kushikatsu rule: the sauce pot is shared by the whole counter, so you dip a skewer once and never again. Use the cabbage to scoop more sauce. Your guide explains this before anyone orders.
Shinsekai is safe and friendly, but the streets immediately west towards Shin-Imamiya are rough at night. We route in and out via Ebisucho and stay together.
Typhoon season runs August and September; most of this route is covered.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian kushikatsu and okonomiyaki are both possible with notice; the dashi and bonito are fish-based, so tell us if that matters.
About 2 km of walking plus one subway ride.
