Tour description
Three kilometres north of town, on the road to the temples, a dirt lot fills every evening with a few hundred stalls, plastic chairs, mats on the ground and Khmer families. Road 60 night market has almost no foreign visitors. That is the point of this tour.
We ride out by tuk-tuk at dusk and eat our way across it: charcoal skewers of marinated pork and chicken, num pang pate sandwiches, chive cakes fried on a flat griddle and dipped in sweet chilli, grilled bananas with coconut, and - if you want it, and nobody has to - the fried tarantula, cricket and silkworm stalls that Cambodians treat as ordinary beer snacks and tourists treat as a dare. Your guide explains where the insect-eating actually comes from, which is a more serious story than the dare version.
We come back into town for the dish Cambodia is proudest of: fish amok, freshwater fish steamed in a banana leaf with coconut, kroeung and noni leaf until it sets like a custard. We finish with palm sugar dessert and a Cambodian iced coffee.
Small group, maximum 10 guests, with tuk-tuk transfers included.
