Tour description
The Bolaven Plateau lies at an altitude of approximately 1,000–1,300 meters east of Pakse. With a cool climate year-round and fertile red basalt soil, it produces much of Laos’s coffee, ever since the French introduced coffee plants to the region.
The tour takes you to Tad Fane Waterfalls, where two parallel streams plunge more than 100 meters into a deep gorge amid virgin forest, viewed from the observation deck opposite. Next is Tad Yuang Waterfall, where a curtain of white water pours into the pool below, where you can cool off and walk down to the base of the falls.
You will visit a family-run coffee plantation and learn about the process from planting and harvesting to drying and roasting, while tasting Arabica and Robusta coffee on site. On the way back, the tour stops at a Katu or Alak village—indigenous Mon-Khmer communities known for their distinctive stilt houses and basketry—and Paksong Market, which sells highland produce.

Other notes
Safety: Some rural areas of Laos still contain unexploded ordnance (UXO) from the war; always stay on marked paths and follow the guide’s instructions.
Currency: The Lao Kip (LAK) is the official currency. Many places accept USD and Thai Baht, but it is advisable to exchange some money into Kip for spending at markets, small shops, and in rural areas.
The tour is normally led by an English-speaking local guide; guides speaking Vietnamese, French, Chinese, Thai, and other languages can be requested (please advise when booking, subject to guide availability).
The price applies per guest for private tours with groups of 2 or more guests. Larger groups receive better rates; please contact us.
Visas: International visitors need a Lao visa (apply for an e-visa online before the trip or obtain a visa at international airports and international border crossings); citizens of ASEAN countries are visa-exempt according to regulations. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months.
The plateau is considerably cooler than Pakse, so bring a light jacket. The coffee harvest season is approximately November to February.
