Tour description
On the Xieng Khouang Plateau, thousands of stone jars—some up to 3 meters tall and weighing several tons—are scattered across the hillsides. Archaeologists believe the jars are associated with Iron Age burial rituals, dating from around 500 BC to 500 AD; local people tell legends of giant kings’ victory celebration wine jars. In 2019, the Plain of Jars was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
The tour takes you to three main areas: Site 1, with more than 300 jars, including the largest; Site 2, spread across two tree-covered hills; and Site 3, located among the rice fields of a Lao village, accessible by walking through the fields. Along the way, you will visit a Hmong village.
Xieng Khouang is also one of the regions most heavily bombed during the war. At the MAG (Mines Advisory Group) information center, you will learn about the UXO clearance work that continues to this day.

Detailed itinerary
Morning (08:00): Car and tour guide pick you up at the hotel.
08:30: Visit Site 1 – the largest cluster of jars, near the town.
10:15: Arrive at Site 2 on the hill (about 25 km away), walking among the jars under the trees.
Lunch (12:00): Enjoy a local meal and visit a Hmong village.
Afternoon (13:30): Visit Site 3, walking through rice fields to the jar clusters.
15:30: Return to Phonsavan and visit the MAG information center.
17:00: Return to the hotel and end the tour.

Free cancellation with a 100% refund when notified at least 24 hours before departure. Cancellations made within 24 hours of departure are non-refundable. In the event of bad weather or attraction closures required by the authorities, we can help reschedule the tour or provide a full refund.
Other notes
Safety: some rural areas of Laos still contain unexploded ordnance (UXO) from the war; always stay on marked cleared paths and follow your guide’s instructions.
Currency: the Lao Kip (LAK) is the official currency; many places accept USD and Thai Baht, but it is advisable to exchange some Kip for spending at markets, small shops, and in rural areas.
The tour is normally led by an English-speaking local guide; Vietnamese-, French-, Chinese-, and Thai-speaking guides may be requested (please inform us when booking, subject to guide availability).
The price applies per person for private tours with groups of 2 or more guests. Larger groups receive better rates; please contact us.
Visas: international visitors need a Laos visa (apply for an e-visa online before the trip or obtain a visa at international airports and international border crossings); ASEAN citizens are visa-exempt in accordance with regulations. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months.
At the jar sites, walk only within the areas marked with posts indicating that UXO clearance has been completed. Phonsavan is located at an altitude of approximately 1,100 meters, and mornings and evenings are quite cold during the dry season.
