Central Laos is a region less explored by tourists but home to distinctive destinations. The program begins in Savannakhet with its French colonial old quarter, St. Teresa’s Church, dinosaur museum, and the sacred That Ing Hang Stupa.
Then, travel by vehicle along National Route 13 beside the Mekong River to Thakhek—the gateway to Khammouane’s limestone mountains. Visit Tham Pha Pa Buddha Cave and Xieng Liab Cave, then travel through limestone mountain roads and past Nam Theun Lake to Kong Lor Village. The highlight of the journey is a boat trip through Kong Lor Cave—the approximately 7.5-kilometer-long underground river running through the mountains.

Safety: some rural areas of Laos still contain unexploded ordnance (UXO) from wartime; always stay on marked paths and follow the guide’s instructions.
Dress code: when entering temples, the Royal Palace, and historical sites, please wear clothing that covers the shoulders and trousers/skirts below the knees, and remove your shoes before entering the main sanctuary.
Currency: the Kip (LAK) is the official currency; many places accept USD and Thai Baht, but you should exchange some money into Kip for spending at markets, small shops, and in rural areas.
