Tour description
Twenty-five minutes east of Ubud, in the old royal town of Gianyar, a covered market hall fills every evening with several dozen food stalls and several hundred Balinese families. There is almost no English, no menus and very few visitors. Pasar Senggol Gianyar is the best value and the most local food experience on the island.
We drive out as the light goes and eat our way along the hall with your guide ordering in Balinese: babi guling by the plate, sate lilit grilled on lemongrass over coconut husk, tipat cantok - rice cakes with vegetables and peanut sauce - nasi campur built from a dozen trays, and bubur sumsum and laklak, the small green rice-flour pancakes with palm sugar and coconut. A full meal here costs a few dollars.
Before the market we stop in a village warung for a proper look at lawar and sambal matah and a cold Bintang, and your guide explains the ceremonial calendar that governs when Balinese food is made and eaten.
Small group, maximum 10 guests. Private air-conditioned transfer from and back to Ubud included.
