Tour description
Before Bangkok became a city of shopping malls and skytrains, it was a city of canals, palaces, and markets, and the city's oldest district still eats the traditional way — early, and then packs up. This tour takes place during those first hours, starting at 7:00 AM, when the Old Town markets are bustling and the temperature is still pleasant.
We begin at Bang Lamphu Market, the local market tucked behind the backpacker district that almost no one staying on Khao San ever visits. Charcoal-grilled pork skewers served with sticky rice, rice congee with ginger and century eggs, crispy fried dough sticks dipped in pandan custard, and coffee poured from high above into plastic bags.
Next, we cross over to Nang Loeng, a covered market community over a century old, where a few families still handcraft royal Thai sweets: golden egg yolk threads, steamed coconut custard cakes, and mung bean paste shaped and painted to look like miniature fruits. Your guide will explain how these desserts arrived in Thailand via a Portuguese-Japanese chef in the 17th century, and why they are so hard to find today.
We finish with two Old Town culinary icons: the pad thai shop that has been wrapping noodles in a thin egg crepe since 1966, and a coconut ice cream cart for the walk back. Along the way, your guide will discuss rice varieties, palm sugar, the differences between four kinds of chili paste, and how Bangkok's street vendor regulations have reshaped where you can and cannot eat on the street.
Small group, maximum 10 guests. A short transfer by tuk-tuk or taxi between the two markets is included.

Other notes
Departures from Wednesday to Monday at 07:00. We do not operate on Tuesdays, when the pad thai shop at the final stop is closed.
The 07:00 start time is fixed for this route. Bang Lamphu is at its best between 06:00 and 08:00, and the royal sweets makers at Nang Loeng often sell out before 09:00.
Nearest public transit: MRT Sam Yot is about a 15-minute walk from the meeting point, or a short taxi ride from anywhere in Old Town. Hotel pick-up can be arranged for an additional fee.
Dietary requirements: please notify us at least 48 hours in advance. A pork-free itinerary is easy to accommodate; vegetarian options are possible at five out of seven stops, and we will substitute the rest.
Bangkok has cleared a significant number of street vendors since 2022, and regulations regarding which sidewalks allow vending continue to shift. We reconfirm each stop the week of your tour and always have a backup plan for every location.
This is a warm morning with little shade between stops. Please bring a hat, sunscreen, and a water bottle that we can refill.
