Tour description

Colombia has more fruit varieties than almost anywhere, most of which never leave the country because they do not travel, and Paloquemao is where they all arrive. This tour starts there at half past seven, when the flower auction is finishing and the fruit hall is at full volume.

Your guide puts thirty or so fruits in front of you: lulo, granadilla, curuba, guanabana, feijoa, mamoncillo, uchuva, zapote, borojo. Most people have heard of two of them. You taste your way along the counter while your guide explains what grows where and why Colombia's geography produces this.

We also eat caldo de costilla, the beef rib broth that Bogota drinks for breakfast and for hangovers; tamal santafereno, a corn parcel steamed in banana leaf with chicken, pork and vegetables, eaten with hot chocolate; and arepas from the griddle.

Afterwards we transfer into the old town for ajiaco, the Bogota soup of three potato varieties, corn and the guascas herb, served with capers, cream and avocado, and chocolate completo - hot chocolate with cheese dropped into it, which is not negotiable here.

Small group, maximum 8 guests, with transport included.
Meeting point:

Plaza de Paloquemao, Avenida Calle 19, Bogota

We meet at the main entrance to Plaza de Paloquemao on Avenida Calle 19. Your guide will have a small sign with your name. Hotel pick-up in central Bogota is included.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - Plaza de Paloquemao: The city's great market at its best hour, with the flower hall, the fruit hall and the butchers, and your guide explaining the geography behind it.

Stop 3 - Caldo de costilla: Beef rib broth with potato, coriander and lime, which Bogota drinks for breakfast and swears by for hangovers.

Other notes

Runs daily at 07:30. Paloquemao opens before dawn and closes in the afternoon; the fruit hall is at its best early.
Altitude: Bogota sits at 2,640 metres, which is higher than most people expect and which catches visitors out. We keep the pace slow, we do not climb the steep La Candelaria streets in your first hours in the city, and we push water. Alcohol hits harder here, which is why this is a morning tour.
Safety, stated openly: Colombia is rated Level 3, reconsider travel, by the US State Department, and the UK foreign office has reported armed robberies of foreign visitors in La Candelaria. We run this tour in daylight, in a group of eight with a local guide, we do not have phones out on the street, we use app-based cars rather than street taxis, and we monitor for demonstrations, which are frequent in central Bogota and can close Carrera 7 and Plaza Bolivar at short notice. We will reroute or cancel rather than run into one.
Drink safety: your guide sources every tasting on this tour. Please do not accept food, drink or anything else from strangers in Bogota - drink spiking is a documented and specific risk here.
Water: Bogota's tap water is generally regarded as safe; we provide bottled water anyway.
Cash: Paloquemao and street carts are cash; restaurants take cards.
Weather: Bogota has no dry season, is cool at around 14 degrees, and rains most afternoons. Bring a layer and a waterproof.
About 2 km of walking plus transport.
