Tour description

Buon Ma Thuot is Vietnam’s coffee capital, but before coffee arrived, this place was—and still is—the homeland of the Ede, one of the Indigenous peoples of the Central Highlands. They live in longhouses, whose length once indicated the number of families from the matrilineal clan living together under one roof.

This tour connects these two cultural stories. We begin at the World of Coffee Museum, an impressive architectural work inspired by Ede longhouses, displaying a collection of coffee tools and the history of coffee from Ethiopia to the Central Highlands. We then stroll through Ako Dhong, an Ede village in the heart of the city, where families still live in longhouses and preserve clan traditions and gong music.

Leaving the village, we visit Bao Dai’s colonial-era hunting palace—the last emperor of Vietnam—now reopened as a museum preserving traces of his time in the highlands, followed by the adjacent Dak Lak Museum. Its galleries on the cultures of the highland peoples—from gong culture, elephant hunting, and agricultural rituals to tomb-house statues—are among the most distinctive in the region. The journey ends at the Victory Monument in the city center.

Since July 2025, Dak Lak has merged with Phu Yen, and Buon Ma Thuot comprises five wards; it remains the province’s administrative center.

Ako Dhong is a living village, not a museum: please move around quietly, ask permission before photographing residents, and enter longhouses only when invited.
Museum opening hours may change during holidays and events; if a museum is closed, we will replace it with Sac Tu Khai Doan Pagoda.
The rainy season in the Central Highlands runs from May to October; afternoons are often rainy.
See our separate Buon Ma Thuot coffee and food tour for a taste of the city’s cuisine.
