Tour description
Bupyeong Kkangtong was Korea's first night market. The name means can market, from the American tinned food traded here after the Korean War, and the food still has that improvised, post-war, make-something-from-anything character.
We start at half past seven, when the carts are all up. Busan eomuk - fish cake, which this city does better than anywhere in Korea - on skewers straight from the broth. Yubu jeongol, a hotpot of stuffed fried tofu pouches. Ssiat hotteok, tteokbokki, Korean fried chicken, and the kind of oddities that only appear at night.
Then we walk or take one short subway hop to Seomyeon, where an alley is dedicated to dwaeji gukbap - pork-bone rice soup with a milky broth, served with a plate of raw chives, shrimp paste and salted shrimp that you season yourself. It is Busan's single most characteristic dish, another refugee invention, and the alley never closes.
Your guide explains the war-era origins of the city's food, why Busan's dialect and appetite are both blunter than Seoul's, and how to season a gukbap properly.
Small group, maximum 8 guests.

Cancellation policy
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. Bupyeong's alley is open-air and closes in heavy weather - if that happens we run an all-Seomyeon version and refund the difference, or refund you in full.
Other notes
Runs daily at 18:30. The Bupyeong night market carts do not set up until about 19:30, so we start at the covered day-market end and move outward as they open.
Minimum age 19, Korea's legal drinking age, because of the soju stop. Soft drinks are served to younger guests on a private booking.
Busan takes direct typhoon hits between July and September; Bupyeong's open alley closes in heavy weather.
Cash is preferred at the carts; your guide handles payment on the tour.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. This route is pork and fish-cake centred; a pescatarian route is easy, a vegetarian one is difficult and we would steer you to the daytime tour.
Use Naver Maps rather than Google Maps in Korea - Google's walking directions do not work properly here.
About 1.5 km of walking plus one subway ride.
