Tour description
Cai Rang is a wholesale market that takes place on the water. Boats anchor midstream and advertise what they sell by hanging a sample from a bamboo pole, while smaller boats weave between them. The market starts before 5:00 AM and winds down around 8:00 AM.
We will be honest with you about the current situation: the market is smaller than it used to be. As roads and bridges have improved, much of the Mekong's commerce has moved onto trucks, and the number of trading boats has dropped significantly compared to its peak years. What remains is genuine but modest, and anyone promising you hundreds of boats at 9:00 AM is selling you a picture that no longer exists. Go at 5:30 AM, take it for what it truly is, and it remains one of the best mornings in Vietnam.
We have breakfast on the river: hu tieu, the southern pork-and-shrimp noodle soup passed over from a floating kitchen to our boat, alongside Vietnamese coffee from a wooden sampan pulled up alongside. Afterwards, we stop at a hu tieu workshop where sheets of noodles are steamed over fabric and dried on bamboo racks, then visit a fruit orchard.
Small group, maximum 10 guests, private boat included.

Stop 1 - Ninh Kieu Pier before dawn: We board a private boat in the dark, with your guide on the river, the market's history and what it has become.
Stop 2 - Cai Rang floating market: Wholesale boats moored mid-river advertising their cargo on a bamboo pole. We move among them as the light comes up.
Stop 3 - Hu tieu on the water: Southern pork and prawn noodle soup cooked on a floating kitchen and passed across to our boat, eaten sitting on the deck.
Stop 4 - Coffee from a canoe: Ca phe sua da handed over from a boat that pulls alongside, which is the only place in Vietnam this happens.
Stop 5 - Tropical fruit from a trader: Whatever is in season bought directly off a boat - rambutan, longan, mangosteen, pomelo - with your guide on the Mekong's orchards.
Stop 6 - Rice noodle workshop: A canal-side family workshop where rice sheets are steamed over cloth, dried on bamboo racks and cut into noodles, with a tasting.
Stop 7 - Banh xeo mien Tay: The Mekong version of the sizzling pancake - much larger, with pork, shrimp and bean sprouts - wrapped in mustard leaf with herbs.

Cancellation policy

Other notes
Departs daily at 05:15 AM. This start time is crucial—the market is essentially over before 8:00 AM and thins out noticeably after 7:00 AM.
A candid note: Cai Rang is genuinely in decline. The number of trading boats is much lower than in the past because commerce in the Mekong has shifted to roads. We present this tour as a sunrise river breakfast paired with a working wholesale market, rather than a bustling spectacle, and we want you to book with clear expectations.
Life jackets are provided and mandatory. Please let us know in advance if anyone in your group cannot swim or has mobility difficulties boarding the boat.
Flood season: The Mekong typically floods between roughly August and November, and king tides flood the central streets of Ninh Kieu on peak tide days from September to November. We will monitor the tide schedules.
Addresses: District-level administrative divisions were abolished in July 2025, and Can Tho City now also includes the former provinces of Soc Trang and Hau Giang. Ninh Kieu is now a ward.
Dietary requirements: please notify us at least 48 hours in advance. Vegetarian options can be arranged with prior notice.
Walking distance is approximately 1 km, plus three hours on the river.
