Tour description

Hardly anyone who visits Cancun actually eats in Cancun. The Hotel Zone is a twenty-two-kilometer strip of sandbanks lined with resorts but lacking any food culture of its own, while the real city lies ten minutes inland, where a quarter of a million people live and eat exceptionally well for very little money.

We start at Mercado 23, a neighborhood market rather than a souvenir bazaar, where loncherias serve cochinita, panuchos, and salbutes to locals on their lunch breaks. Your guide will introduce you to Yucatecan ingredients—achiote, sour orange, habanero—because Cancun is located in Yucatan and the cuisine here is Yucatecan, no matter what the resort menus say.

Then come the Baja-style fish tacos: white fish lightly coated in batter, fried, and wrapped in a tortilla, which you then finish yourself at the salsa bar with cabbage, chipotle mayonnaise, and lime. Next is aguachile, raw shrimp cured in lime juice with chilies and cucumber—the Pacific coast's sharper, more vibrant answer to ceviche.

We finish at Parque de las Palapas at dusk, where the whole city gathers to enjoy marquesitas—crispy rolled crepes filled with Edam cheese and Nutella, which sounds odd but totally works—as well as elotes and churros.

Small groups, maximum 8 guests.
Meeting point:

We meet at the Calle Cedro entrance to Mercado 23 in downtown Cancun. Your guide will have a small sign with your name. Hotel Zone pick-up can be arranged for an extra fee.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - Mercado 23: A working neighbourhood market with loncherias rather than souvenirs, and your guide on Yucatecan ingredients.
Stop 2 - Cochinita and panuchos: Pit-roasted pork with pickled red onion, and fried tortillas stuffed with black bean and topped with turkey and avocado.
Stop 3 - Baja fish tacos: Battered white fish fried to order, dropped into a tortilla, then finished by you at a salsa bar with cabbage, chipotle mayonnaise and lime.
Stop 4 - Aguachile: Raw shrimp cured in lime juice with serrano chilli, red onion and cucumber. Sharper and hotter than ceviche, and served immediately.
Stop 5 - Avenida Yaxchilan walk: A short guided walk along downtown's restaurant avenue with your guide on how Cancun was planned from nothing in 1970.
Stop 6 - Parque de las Palapas: The downtown plaza at dusk, where the city eats. Elotes, esquites and panuchos from the stalls around the edge.
Stop 7 - Marquesita: A crisp rolled crepe filled with shredded Edam cheese and Nutella or cajeta. A Yucatan invention that should not work and does.

Other notes

Daily departures at 16:00, ending at Parque de las Palapas after dark, when the square is at its liveliest.
Getting here: The Hotel Zone is not pedestrian-friendly and lacks street food. This tour takes place entirely in El Centro, ten minutes inland. We can arrange pickup in the Hotel Zone for an additional fee; otherwise, take the R1 or R2 bus, and your guide will explain how to return.
Safety: Downtown Cancun is a typical Mexican city, and this route is safe. We keep the group together after dark, use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps, and stick to the Palapas and Yaxchilan areas rather than the outskirts of Centro at night.
Aguachile is raw shrimp. We visit a high-turnover stall that maintains proper refrigeration, and this dish is optional—just let us know, and we will swap it for cooked shrimp.
Water and ice: Tap water is not drinkable; ice used at our trusted venues is commercially manufactured.
Currency: Whenever using a card machine here, always choose to pay in pesos, never in US dollars. Use ATMs located inside bank lobbies.
Hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking between August and October.
Dietary requirements: Please notify us at least 48 hours in advance. Vegetarians can enjoy bean panuchos, esquites, marquesitas, and nopal.
Walking distance is about 2 km on flat ground.
