Tour description
Casablanca is not a tourist city and its food is better for it. It is a working Atlantic port with an Art Deco downtown built by the French in the 1920s, and the best meal in it costs about twenty dollars and involves choosing your own fish.
We start at the Marche Central, built in 1917, where the fishmongers' aisle runs down the middle and half a dozen grill stalls sit around the edge. You choose - sea bream, red mullet, prawns, calamari, whatever came in that morning - your guide agrees the price by weight in writing, and it goes straight onto a charcoal grill and arrives with chermoula, bread and a tomato salad. Your guide handles all of it, which on this particular market matters.
Then we take a taxi to Habous, the quarter the French built in the 1930s in a Moroccan idiom, for a very different Morocco: an almond pastry shop that has been there since the 1930s, an olive and preserved lemon souk, bessara from a hole-in-the-wall, and bread from a communal oven.
Small group, maximum 10 guests, with a taxi transfer included.

Other notes
Runs Monday to Saturday at 10:30. The market is at its best in the morning and the fish is freshest then.
On the market, plainly: the Marche Central grill stalls have a reputation for recruiters who steer visitors, plates that appear on the bill without being ordered, and different prices for different languages. Your guide agrees a fixed per-head price in advance with one stall and pays. That is the main reason to take a guided version of this.
Seafood is the core of this tour. If you cannot eat seafood, tell us at least 48 hours ahead and we will build a Habous-centred route instead.
Ramadan: daytime food service largely stops. We switch to an evening tour for those weeks - ask us.
Alcohol: Casablanca is the easiest Moroccan city for a licensed drink, and your guide can point you to a proper old bar afterwards. It is not part of this tour.
Water and hygiene: bottled water only. We use stalls that grill to order and avoid anything standing.
About 1.5 km of walking plus one taxi transfer.
