Tour description
Chiang Mai's evening food does not happen on the tourist walking streets. It happens at two of the Old City's four gates, where stalls set up at five and run past midnight, and where the queues are students, nurses finishing shifts and families on motorbikes.
At Chang Phueak Gate we eat the dish the gate is famous for: khao kha moo, pork leg braised for hours in soy and five spice until it collapses, served over rice with pickled mustard greens, a boiled egg and a fierce garlic-chilli vinegar. The stall that made it famous is run by a woman in a cowboy hat and regularly sells out before eight, so we go early. Then Thai suki cooked on a flat grill, grilled pork skewers and a bowl of bua loy, warm rice-flour balls in coconut milk.
The second half is Pratu Chiang Mai market on the south side, where the food is more northern: gaeng hang lay, sai ua, grilled catfish, deep-fried chicken and a wall of curry trays sold by the bag.
Small group, maximum 10 guests, with a songthaew ride between the two gates included.

Chang Phueak Gate, north side of the Old City moat, Chiang Mai
We meet just outside Chang Phueak Gate on the north side of the moat, beside the food stalls. Your guide will have a small sign with your name. About 10 minutes by songthaew from most Old City hotels.
Detailed itinerary
Stop 1 - Khao kha moo, Chang Phueak Gate: Pork leg braised for hours until it falls apart, over rice with pickled greens, a soft egg and garlic-chilli vinegar. The stall's queue is the local landmark.
Stop 2 - Thai suki: Glass noodles, egg, pork and vegetables cooked on a flat grill and served with a sharp fermented bean dipping sauce - a Chinese-Thai dish Chiang Mai does particularly well.
Stop 3 - Grilled pork skewers and sticky rice: Moo ping from the charcoal, eaten with a bag of sticky rice the way everyone here eats it while walking.
Stop 4 - Bua loy: Warm rice-flour balls in sweet coconut milk, sometimes with a poached egg stirred in. The standard Chiang Mai nightcap.
Stop 5 - Songthaew to Pratu Chiang Mai: A short ride around the moat to the south gate, included in the price.
Stop 6 - Pratu market curry trays: Gaeng hang lay, northern curries and nam prik sold by the bag, with your guide explaining how a Thai family actually buys dinner.
Stop 7 - Grilled catfish and fried chicken: Charcoal-grilled catfish with herbs and southern-style fried chicken from the market's grill row, with a cold drink to finish.

Other notes
Runs daily at 17:30. We start early because the famous pork-leg stall regularly sells out well before 20:00.
On Saturdays the Wualai Walking Street and on Sundays the Ratchadamnoen Walking Street take over parts of the Old City from about 16:00. Both are worth seeing but are impassable between 19:00 and 21:00 with a group, so on those evenings we adjust the route and finish at the edge of the market rather than pushing through it.
Burning season, mid-February to late April, brings hazardous air quality. We disclose it at booking and supply N95 masks on request.
Songkran, 13 to 15 April: we do not run.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. This route is pork-heavy; vegetarian and halal versions are possible with notice but change about half the stops.
Minimum age 10. About 1.5 km of walking plus one songthaew ride.
