Tour description

Da Nang sits between Hue and Hoi An and cooks like neither of them. The food here is bolder than Hanoi, less sweet than Saigon, and built around two things the city is fiercely proud of: mi Quang, a bowl of wide turmeric noodles with barely any broth, and bun cha ca, a clear soup thick with hand-pounded mackerel cake. Both are breakfast dishes, which is why this tour starts at seven.

Your guide takes you to the shops locals actually queue at rather than the beachfront restaurants: a mi Quang counter that has run on the same recipe for decades, a fish-cake soup kitchen where the cakes are pounded and fried each morning, and a shop that serves nothing but banh trang cuon thit heo, boiled pork rolled at the table with rice paper, green banana, starfruit and a dozen herbs, dipped in fermented anchovy sauce. Then we walk into Con Market, the city's biggest, for steamed banh beo, tapioca dumplings and a bowl of che.

Along the way you will learn why central Vietnam is the spiciest region in the country, how fish sauce is graded, what the local mam nem is and why it frightens outsiders, and how the city's food changed after it became Vietnam's fastest-growing tourism centre.

Small group, maximum 10 guests, about 2 kilometres of flat walking.

We meet outside the mi Quang shop at 95A Nguyen Tri Phuong. Your guide will have a small sign with your name. About 10 minutes by taxi from the My Khe beach hotels.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - Mi Quang, Nguyen Tri Phuong: Wide turmeric-stained rice noodles with shrimp and pork, a splash of intensely reduced broth, peanuts, fresh herbs and a shard of grilled rice cracker. The dish central Vietnam argues about most.
Stop 2 - Bun cha ca, Nguyen Chi Thanh: Clear soup with hand-pounded and fried mackerel cake, pineapple and tomato, from a kitchen that has been doing only this for decades.
Stop 3 - Banh xeo and nem lui, Hoang Dieu alley: Small crisp turmeric pancakes and lemongrass pork skewers, wrapped by your guide at the table in rice paper with herbs and dipped in a thick peanut-liver sauce.
Stop 4 - Banh trang cuon thit heo: Boiled pork belly rolled with rice paper, green banana, starfruit and herbs, dipped in mam nem fermented anchovy sauce. The dish Da Nang people eat when they want to show off.
Stop 5 - Con Market: A walk through the city's largest market with your guide translating the produce, plus steamed banh beo and tapioca dumplings from the food court.
Stop 6 - Che and Vietnamese coffee: A sweet bean-and-jelly soup to finish, with iced coffee and your guide's notes on where to eat for the rest of your stay.

Cancellation policy

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable, because the food is bought fresh on the morning of the tour. Tours run rain or shine; most stops are under cover. If we cancel, you receive a full refund or a free transfer to another date.

Other notes

Runs daily at 07:00 and 08:00. Several stops sell out by late morning, so the earlier departure is the fuller experience.
Note on addresses: Quang Nam province was merged into Da Nang City in July 2025 and many ward names changed. Street numbers are unchanged and taxi drivers still use the old district names, which is what we give you.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. No-pork, pescatarian and vegetarian versions are all workable here with notice.
Da Nang's rain season runs roughly September to December, with occasional typhoons. We run in rain but will contact you if a storm makes walking unsafe.
Wear comfortable shoes; about 2 km of flat walking with several sit-down stops.
