Tour description

Ao Nang is where visitors stay. Krabi Town, half an hour inland at the river mouth, is where southern Thailand really eats—a small provincial capital with a Thai-Chinese-Muslim mix, mangroves surrounding three sides, and a night market set up at the pier every evening.

We begin at Chao Fah Night Market with khao gaeng, the southern curry-and-rice style where you point to a tray and receive three spoonfuls of dishes, while your guide translates the names of the trays for you: yellow crab curry, sour fish curry, and stir-fried stink beans with shrimp paste. Next comes hoi chak teen, a local wing shell eaten by sucking it straight from the shell, grilled squid with intensely spicy green sauce, and satay from the Muslim stalls.

Krabi has a large Muslim community, so the second half of the journey features roti, Malay-style fried chicken, and sweet tea with condensed milk. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, we also explore Walking Street behind Maharaj Road—the liveliest and best evening of the week.

Small group, limited to 10 guests, entirely on foot within approximately 600 meters of the riverfront.
Meeting point:

Chao Fah Pier, Kong Ka Road, Krabi Town

We meet at Chao Fah Pier on the Krabi riverfront, beside the night market entrance. Your guide will have a small sign with your name. About 30 minutes by songthaew or taxi from Ao Nang.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - Khao gaeng curry trays, Chao Fah market: Point-and-eat southern curries over rice - yellow crab curry, sour fish curry, stink beans with shrimp paste. Your guide translates every tray.
Stop 2 - Hoi chak teen: The local wing shells, boiled with lemongrass and eaten by sucking them straight from the shell with a chilli-lime dip. Messy and very Krabi.
Stop 3 - Grilled squid and skewers: Whole squid over charcoal with the sharp green seafood sauce, plus chicken and pork skewers from the grill row.
Stop 4 - Muslim satay and fried chicken: Chicken satay with a thick peanut sauce and Malay-style fried chicken from Krabi's Muslim stalls, with sweet tea.
Stop 5 - Krabi Walking Street (Friday to Sunday) or riverfront stalls: On weekend evenings we walk the Maharaj Soi 8 Walking Street; midweek we stay on the pier and river promenade with the local crowd.
Stop 6 - Roti and cha yen: Butter-fried roti with condensed milk and a Thai iced tea to finish, with your guide's notes on eating around Krabi and Ao Nang.

Cancellation policy

Cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. The tour operates rain or shine, but during the peak rainy season from September to October, heavy rain may cause outdoor stalls to close—in that case, we will switch to covered shophouse restaurants or provide you with a full refund.

Other notes

Departs daily at 17:00. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are the liveliest evenings because Walking Street operates on these days; midweek is quieter and better suited for conversation.
Getting there: Krabi Town is approximately 30 minutes from Ao Nang by songthaew or taxi. The last songthaew back to Ao Nang leaves at around 22:00—after that, you will need a private taxi, which we can help arrange.
The rainy season lasts from May to October, peaking in September and October, with heavy afternoon showers.
Dietary requirements: please let us know at least 48 hours in advance. Krabi has a large Muslim community, so a fully halal tour route is easy to arrange here. Vegetarian dishes can be served, but southern Thai cuisine uses a lot of shrimp paste and fish sauce, so please inform us in advance.
The markets accept cash only. Entirely on foot, approximately 1 km.
