Fez is the spiritual and intellectual soul of Morocco, home to the world's largest car-free urban area: a medieval medina with around 9,000 winding alleyways that have remained largely unchanged for a thousand years. On this walking tour, a local guide is essential to help you navigate and understand this extraordinary living labyrinth.
You will pass through the famous Blue Gate, stroll through the alleyways of coppersmiths and weavers, and fully take in the sights and distinctive aromas of the ancient tanneries. Along the way, you will hear stories about the world's oldest university, craft guilds, and daily life in the medina. Stop 1 – Bab Bou Jeloud (The Blue Gate): We meet at the magnificent glazed-tile gateway leading into the medina.
Stop 2 – Talaa Kebira: The main thoroughfare leading deep into the heart of the old city.
Stop 3 – Bou Inania Madrasa: The exquisite 14th-century religious school (viewed from the entrance).
Stop 4 – Artisan Souks: The alleyways of coppersmiths, weavers, and carpenters.
Stop 5 – Al-Qarawiyyin: The world's oldest continually operating university.
Stop 6 – The Tanneries: The famous ancient tanneries (viewed from an overlook).
Stop 7 – Medina Viewpoint: We conclude the tour with a panoramic view over the medina's sea of rooftops.
