Tour description
Haiphong was once the main commercial port in the northern region under the French colonial administration, and for approximately sixty years, all goods entering and leaving Tonkin had to pass through here. As a result, the city is home to one of Vietnam’s most intact colonial urban ensembles—with broad boulevards, a neoclassical Opera House, a Gothic-style museum, and riverside merchant houses—located in a city that most international visitors only glimpse while taking the ferry to Cat Ba.
This tour takes you on a leisurely walk through the historic quarter with a guide born and raised here. We begin at the Opera House (1912), cross tree-lined Dien Bien Phu Boulevard, and spend nearly an hour inside the Haiphong Museum—a Gothic building constructed in 1919, with exhibits recreating the battles on the Bach Dang River, the colonial port era, and the city’s role in the wars of the 20th century. We will admire the Cathedral, the old city hall, and the villas along the boulevard, then walk down to the banks of the Tam Bac River—the former commercial harbor.
The second half of the tour takes visitors from French architectural heritage to traditional Vietnamese culture. A car will take us to Nghe Temple, dedicated to the female general Le Chan—the founder and pioneer who established the settlement in what is now Haiphong—and we will finish at Hang Kenh Communal House (1719), a famous national heritage site renowned for its wood-carving art.
Since July 2025, Haiphong has merged with Hai Duong Province and is now organized into new wards (the French Quarter is in Hong Bang Ward); your guide will explain these changes in more detail.
