Tour description
Pakse lies where the Xe Don River flows into the Mekong River and serves as the gateway to the Bolaven Plateau, Wat Phu, and the Si Phan Don region. Most visitors only stop overnight, but the city has several sights worth exploring in an afternoon.
The tour begins at Wat Luang Temple on the banks of the Xe Don River—the city’s largest temple, featuring a school for monks and colorful statues and murals. Next, visit the Champasak Historical Heritage Museum (depending on opening hours) to learn about Wat Phu and the ethnic groups of the plateau, then stroll through Dao Heuang Market—the largest market in southern Laos, offering Bolaven coffee, wild vegetables, Mekong River fish, and woven textiles.
As afternoon turns to evening, your vehicle takes you across the Laos–Japan Friendship Bridge over the Mekong River to Phou Salao Hill, home to a large golden Buddha statue overlooking the city. From here, enjoy sunset over the Mekong River and panoramic views of Pakse.
