Tour description
Ipoh was built on tin, and when the mines closed, the town almost ground to a halt; that is why the 1930s kopitiams here still look and operate much as they did in the past. White coffee was invented here—the beans are roasted with palm oil margarine instead of sugar, creating a lighter, more nutty cup of coffee—and the town’s bean sprouts, grown with limestone-filtered water, are famous for being plump and crunchy.
This walking tour takes place in the morning because Ipoh Old Town is a morning town: the coffee shops open at 6:30 a.m. and most have finished cleaning up before 2:30 p.m. We start with white coffee and kaya toast at one of the original shops, then enjoy chicken hor fun in a famous marble-topped kopitiam known for its mirrored wall and caramel flan. Next comes bean sprout chicken—poached chicken, a mound of bean sprouts dressed with soy sauce and sesame, and a bowl of silky-smooth flat rice noodles—followed by a walk through Concubine Lane, the narrow alley behind the rows of shophouses.
We finish with warm, freshly baked kaya puff pastries and tau fu fah, silken tofu in sweet syrup.
Small group, limited to 10 guests, entirely on foot.

Other notes
Runs on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 08:00. We do not operate on Wednesdays or Thursdays, when some key kopitiams on this route are closed—a Wednesday tour would miss three stops in a row.
Ipoh Old Town is a morning-only district. Kopitiams close between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m., and there is no evening Old Town food route, so we do not offer this option.
Getting here: Ipoh is about 2.5 hours from Kuala Lumpur by ETS train, making it ideal for a leisurely day trip. Ipoh Station is a ten-minute walk from the meeting point.
Halal: Ipoh Old Town food uses pork and lard. The main halal highlight here is nasi ganja, an Indian-Muslim rice dish, and we can build a halal route around it if notified in advance.
Dietary requirements: please let us know at least 48 hours in advance.
Ipoh is not covered by the Michelin Guide, so be wary of anyone promoting an Ipoh stall as a Bib Gourmand.
Entirely on foot, approximately 1.5 km along flat streets.
