Tour description

Ask an Istanbul cook where they eat and they will say Kadikoy. It is on the Asian side, across the Bosphorus, and its market streets are flatter, cheaper and far more local than anything in the old city.

We start in the market: a fishmonger's row where the catch is laid out on ice, cheese shops with forty kinds of Anatolian cheese, pickle shops selling glasses of brine to drink, and a stall that does nothing but roasted nuts. Your guide walks you through it and explains what is worth buying.

Then the food. A restaurant serving rotating regional Anatolian dishes rather than the standard Istanbul menu - the kind of cooking that changes every month depending on what a particular village sends. Then meze: stuffed vine leaves, smoked aubergine, fava, octopus salad, spread across a table with a glass of raki and cold water, which is how Istanbul actually eats in the evening.

We finish with Turkish ice cream, beaten until it is elastic enough to be cut with a knife, and a last cup of tea in a side street.

Small group, maximum 10 guests, entirely on foot.
Meeting point:

Kadikoy ferry terminal, Asian side, Istanbul

View on map

We meet outside the Kadikoy ferry terminal on the Asian side. Your guide will have a small sign with your name. Kadikoy is on the M4 metro and is reachable by ferry from Eminonu, Karakoy and Besiktas.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - Kadikoy fish market: The catch on ice, with your guide naming the fish, explaining the Bosphorus seasons and why the bonito run matters so much here.
Stop 2 - Cheese, pickles and nuts: An Anatolian cheese shop, a pickle shop where you drink a glass of the brine, and roasted nuts from a stall that does only that.
Stop 3 - Regional Anatolian cooking: A restaurant serving rotating dishes from across Anatolia rather than the standard Istanbul menu - the food you would otherwise have to travel for.
Stop 4 - Meze table: Stuffed vine leaves, smoked aubergine, fava, octopus salad and hummus, spread across a table the way Turkish evenings work.
Stop 5 - Raki: A glass of the anise spirit with cold water, which turns it cloudy, and an explanation of the etiquette that goes with it. Optional.
Stop 6 - Grilled fish or kofte: Whatever the market had best that day, grilled simply, with rocket and lemon.
Stop 7 - Dondurma and tea: Turkish ice cream beaten until it can be cut with a knife, and a last tulip glass of tea.

Other notes

Runs daily at 17:30.
Minimum age 18 because of the raki stop. We can run a private family version without alcohol - ask us.
Getting here: the ferry from Eminonu, Karakoy or Besiktas is the best way to arrive and takes about twenty minutes. Ferries need an Istanbulkart and do not take cash. The M4 metro also reaches Kadikoy.
Kadikoy market is quieter on Sundays and a number of shops close.
Ramadan: ask us when you book and we will tell you whether your dates fall inside it and adjust the timing.
Prices in Turkey move quickly - the lira has lost significant value over the past year. Our tour price is fixed in US dollars at the time you book.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian is genuinely easy in Turkey; vegan is workable with notice.
Entirely on foot, about 1.5 km on flat streets.
