Tour description
Jakarta is a city that comes alive at night. The heat eases, traffic thins out a little, and two central streets fill with charcoal smoke and plastic chairs. This tour explores both places.
Jalan Sabang is a five-hundred-meter stretch that has been grilling satay since the 1970s. We’ll eat chicken satay with thick peanut sauce and compressed rice cakes at the cart everyone debates is the best, along with soto Betawi—Jakarta’s own specialty, a milky beef soup with tomatoes and fried shallots—and nasi goreng kambing, goat fried rice cooked in a huge wok over a roaring flame.
Then it’s a short ride to Pecenongan, which truly only starts getting busy at nine in the evening and stays lively until two in the morning. Here we’ll eat kepiting saus padang, crab in a thick chili sauce that you’ll tackle with a small hammer and your hands, then finish with martabak—either the savory version, with egg and beef folded in a pan, or the sweet version, a thick pancake cut open and filled with chocolate, cheese, and condensed milk: the most distinctly Jakartan dish you can try.
Small group, maximum 10 guests, including taxi transportation.

Stop 2 - Soto Betawi: Jakarta's own soup - beef and offal in a milky coconut-and-broth base with tomato, fried shallot and lime. Ordered your way, with or without offal.
Stop 3 - Nasi goreng kambing: Goat fried rice cooked in a metre-wide wok over a roaring fire, heavy with sweet soy and spice, at a Sabang street stall.
Stop 4 - Taxi to Pecenongan: A short ride to the late-night street, included in the price.
Stop 5 - Kepiting saus padang: Crab in a thick chilli and tomato sauce, cracked with a mallet and eaten with your hands and a pile of napkins. Jakarta's great late-night dish.
Stop 6 - Grilled seafood sides: Grilled squid or prawns with sambal and kangkung stir-fried with garlic, to round out the table.
Stop 7 - Martabak: The finish. A thick pancake split and filled with chocolate, cheese, peanut and condensed milk, or the savoury egg-and-beef version, from a Pecenongan institution.

Cancellation policy
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable, as the crab is ordered in your name. The tour operates rain or shine, but severe flooding during the rainy season may cause Pecenongan to close—we will change the route or provide a full refund.
Other notes
Departs daily at 18:00.
This route is halal-friendly: the satay, soto Betawi, nasi goreng kambing, and martabak are all halal at the stalls we use, and the seafood in Pecenongan is as well. Alcohol is not included in this tour. If you particularly want to explore Jakarta’s Chinese-Indonesian cuisine and pork dishes, choose our morning walking tour in Glodok.
Traffic: Jakarta’s evening rush hour lasts from 16:30 to 20:00. We intentionally start at 18:00 and keep the itinerary within two clusters of stops with one short transfer, because a longer cross-city journey can take an hour.
The rainy season lasts from November to March and causes rapid flooding in low-lying central districts.
Dietary requirements: please let us know at least 48 hours in advance. A vegetarian route in Jakarta can be arranged with advance notice, though some stops will change.
Minimum age 10. Approximately 1.5 km of walking plus one taxi ride.
