Tour description

Uganda's food is built on the banana. Matoke, green cooking bananas steamed until they turn gold and mash into a purée, is the national staple, and the country grows more bananas per person than anywhere on earth.

We start at Nakasero Market, where your guide walks you through the produce - a dozen banana varieties, groundnuts, jackfruit, passion fruit, silver fish - and you taste fresh juice and roasted groundnuts.

Then the dish Uganda is actually famous for: the rolex. A chapati is fried, an omelette with tomato, onion and cabbage is cooked on top of it, and the whole thing is rolled. The name is a corruption of rolled eggs. It costs under a dollar, it is made in ninety seconds in front of you, and it is very good.

We also eat luwombo, meat or groundnut sauce steamed inside a banana leaf, which is a ceremonial Buganda dish, and matoke with g-nut sauce. We finish on the muchomo strip at dusk, where goat is grilled over coals on the street and eaten with gonja, roasted plantain, and a cold Nile Special.

Small group, maximum 8 guests, with private transport included.
Meeting point:

Nakasero Market, Market Street entrance, Kampala

We meet at the Market Street entrance to Nakasero Market in the city centre. Your guide will have a small sign with your name. Hotel pick-up in central Kampala is included.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - Nakasero Market: A dozen banana varieties, groundnuts, jackfruit and silver fish, with your guide on Uganda's agriculture and why matoke matters so much.
Stop 2 - Fresh juice and roasted groundnuts: Passion fruit and mango pressed to order, with groundnuts roasted in a pan of sand.
Stop 3 - Matoke and g-nut sauce: Green bananas steamed in leaves until golden, with groundnut sauce and beans - the everyday Ugandan plate.
Stop 4 - Luwombo: Chicken, beef or groundnut sauce steamed inside a folded banana leaf, a Buganda court dish that is still made for celebrations.
Stop 5 - The rolex: A chapati fried, an omelette with tomato, onion and cabbage cooked on top, and the whole thing rolled. Made in front of you at a student-quarter stand.
Stop 6 - Goat muchomo: Goat grilled over coals on the street at dusk, cut up with a knife on a board, with gonja roasted plantain and chilli.
Stop 7 - Ugandan coffee or a cold beer: Uganda is Africa's second-largest coffee exporter. We finish with a cup of it, or a Nile Special.

Other notes

Runs daily at 15:00, finishing around 19:00 so that the muchomo strip is at its best.
Transport: we use private cars, never boda-boda motorcycle taxis, for guests. Boda muggings are a documented problem in Kampala and we will not put visitors on them.
Safety: Kampala is generally welcoming, but travel advisories note a real terrorism risk including at restaurants and bars, and protests can start without warning following the 2026 elections. We monitor daily, keep the group small, and will cancel and refund rather than run on a disrupted day. Check your own government's travel advice before booking.
Drinks: your guide orders and watches all drinks. Drink spiking is a flagged risk in Ugandan nightlife.
Uganda has laws that criminalise same-sex relationships and they carry severe penalties. We think LGBT travellers deserve to know that before booking rather than after arriving, and we will answer any question you have honestly.
Water and hygiene: bottled water only. Matoke, beans and grilled meat are cooked hot; we avoid raw salads and iced street juice.
Payment: mobile money is universal and your guide uses it.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian works well via matoke, g-nut sauce, beans, chapati and the rolex.
About 1 km of walking in total plus transport between stops.
