Tour description

Spared from wartime bombing, Kanazawa preserves the atmosphere of feudal Japan like few other cities, with intact geisha teahouse districts, samurai residences and one of the country's most celebrated gardens. Once the seat of a powerful clan, it was a great centre of culture and craft. On this walking tour a local guide reveals its living traditions.

You will wander the wooden lattice teahouses of the Higashi Chaya district, explore the earthen-walled lanes of the old samurai quarter, and hear about gold leaf, silk and the tea ceremony. Elegant, atmospheric and gloriously preserved, Kanazawa offers a rare journey into old Japan on foot.
