Tour description
Kuala Lumpur got a Michelin Guide in 2023 and most of its Bib Gourmand entries turned out to be shophouses and hawker stalls that had been there for eighty years. This walk visits several of them, in the few blocks of Chinatown where the city started.
We begin with Hainanese chicken rice at a Bib Gourmand shop on Jalan Tun H S Lee - poached bird, chilli-ginger sauce, rice cooked in stock - then beef noodles at another Bib address, where the broth has been maintained for decades. The centrepiece is Madras Lane, an alley of a dozen stalls behind the wet market that most visitors walk straight past: yong tau foo, where you pick stuffed tofu and vegetables from a tray and have them dropped into soup, plus curry laksa and chee cheong fun.
We finish with KL's own Hokkien mee - thick noodles braised black in dark soy with pork lard crisps, a dish that exists in this form only in Kuala Lumpur - and a kopi ordered in hawker shorthand, which your guide will teach you.
Small group, maximum 10 guests, entirely on foot within about 1 kilometre.

Other notes
Runs Sunday and Tuesday to Saturday at 08:30. We do not run on Mondays, when several Chinatown stalls including the Madras Lane alley take their rest day.
This route is pork-heavy and not halal. For Muslim guests, or for a mixed group, take our Kampung Baru evening tour instead, which is entirely halal - the two rarely overlap on the same street in KL, so we run them as separate products rather than trying to mix them.
Note: Imbi Market has permanently moved to ICC Pudu. Guidebooks still sending people to the old Imbi site are out of date; we do not include it.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian works well via yong tau foo, chee cheong fun and Indian stalls nearby.
Most stalls are cash only. Nearest transit is Pasar Seni on the LRT and MRT.
Entirely on foot, about 1 km on flat streets.
