Tour description
Mombasa Old Town is thoroughly Swahili, meaning Arab, Persian, Indian, and Bantu blended and layered over a thousand years of monsoon trade. The cuisine reflects all of these influences, and none of it is found in Nairobi.
We start with a Swahili breakfast: mahamri, cardamom and coconut doughnuts, dipped in mbaazi, pigeon peas cooked in coconut milk. Then kahawa chungu, bitter coffee poured from a brass kettle by a man walking the alleys with a charcoal brazier, enjoyed in a small cup with a piece of halwa.
We eat biryani at a spot that has been serving it since the 1950s, where the rice is layered and steamed with spices distinctly Swahili rather than Indian, alongside viazi karai, turmeric-battered potatoes served with tamarind chutney. Then into the alleys themselves: carved Zanzibar doors, Omani balconies, and a guide who can “read” them.
The evening departure ends at the waterfront, where skewers of mishkaki, cassava, and madafu—fresh coconut water sipped straight from the fruit—are served at sunset.
Small groups, maximum 8 guests, entirely on foot.

Other notes
Daily departures, with a morning tour at 08:00 and an afternoon tour at 16:00. The heat and humidity between eleven and four make a midday tour genuinely uncomfortable, which is why we do not operate during that time.
Safety: we run Old Town tours with local guides and only during the day or early evening. Mombasa Old Town and the Likoni ferry area are highlighted as crime hotspots in travel advisories, and we will not let you wander there alone after dark. Your guide will accompany the group throughout the entire route.
Dress code: this is a predominantly Muslim neighborhood. Please cover your shoulders and knees; women may wish to bring a light shawl.
Ramadan: daytime business mostly ceases, and the evening becomes the best street food hour of the year. We run only evening tours during Ramadan, and it is well worth timing your visit for this. Please refrain from eating or drinking publicly during daylight hours during that month.
Drinking water and hygiene: bottled water only. We choose frying and grilling stalls with high customer turnover and avoid anything that has been sitting out.
Payment: M-Pesa and small-denomination Kenyan shilling notes; your guide will handle payments throughout the journey.
Dietary requirements: please let us know at least 48 hours in advance. Vegetarians are easily catered for with mbaazi, viazi karai, bhajias, and coconut rice.
Walking distance is approximately 1.5 km along flat but uneven alleyways.
