Tour description

Nairobi's cuisine is Kenya's regional food moving into the city - Luo fish from Lake Victoria, Kikuyu githeri, coastal Swahili spices, and nyama choma, slow-charcoal-grilled goat that is the signature of how Kenyans spend an afternoon.

We start at City Market, a 1930s indoor market in the CBD, where your guide takes you through the produce, spices, and fish, then continue to a choma joint where you choose your meat by the kilogram at the counter, it goes onto charcoal, and forty minutes later it returns on a wooden board, chopped, with kachumbari and a mound of ugali.

We also eat whole fried tilapia with ugali and greens at a Luo restaurant that has been a Nairobi institution for decades, mutura - the Kenyan blood sausage grilled on the street - and sukuma wiki, the collard greens whose name means stretch the week.

We finish with Kenyan coffee, some of the world's best and almost entirely exported, and a dawa, the honey, lime, and ginger drink whose name means medicine.

Small groups of up to 8, with vetted private transport between neighborhoods included.
Meeting point:

City Market, Muindi Mbingu Street, Nairobi CBD

We meet at the Muindi Mbingu Street entrance to City Market in the CBD. Your guide will have a small sign with your name. Hotel pick-up is included in central Nairobi.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - City Market: A 1930s hall in the CBD. Your guide walks you through Kenyan produce, dried fish, spices and the flower trade.
Stop 2 - Whole fried tilapia: Lake Victoria tilapia fried whole and served with ugali and greens, at a Luo restaurant that has been a Nairobi institution for decades.
Stop 3 - Sukuma wiki and githeri: Collard greens whose name means stretch the week, and the maize and bean stew that is the Kikuyu staple.
Stop 4 - Nyama choma: Goat selected by weight at the counter, roasted over charcoal and chopped on a wooden board, with kachumbari tomato and onion salad and a mound of ugali.
Stop 5 - Mutura: Kenyan blood and offal sausage grilled over coals and cut into rounds, with chilli and lime. Optional, and your guide goes first.
Stop 6 - Kenyan coffee: Kenya grows some of the best arabica on earth and exports nearly all of it. We drink it properly, with your guide on the auction system.
Stop 7 - Dawa: Honey, lime and ginger, with or without vodka. The name means medicine and after a plate of goat it more or less is.

Other notes

Departs daily at 11:00.
Safety, stated clearly: Nairobi's CBD is fine by day with a guide, and we do not run tours there after dark. We use door-to-door vetted transport rather than walking between neighborhoods, cap groups at eight, and your guide will tell you to keep phones away in the market. We do not offer walking tours in Kibera, Mathare, or any other informal settlement, as we do not believe they can be done respectfully as walking tour products.
Protests can occur in Nairobi with little notice and are sometimes disrupted by police action. We monitor daily and cancel and refund rather than push through.
Drink safety: your guide orders and monitors all drinks. Drink spiking and counterfeit spirits are both documented issues in Kenyan nightlife, which is one reason this is a daytime tour.
Water and hygiene: bottled water only. Nyama choma is cooked to order and low risk; raw kachumbari, salads, and ice are the hazards and we manage them.
Payment: M-Pesa is universal in Kenya and your guide uses it; you do not need cash.
Dietary requirements: please let us know at least 48 hours in advance. The vegetarian path through githeri, sukuma wiki, chapati, and beans is genuinely good.
About 1 km total walking, plus vehicle transport between stops.
