Tour description

Hotels in Nha Trang serve buffet breakfasts for people who then go and sit on the beach. Two blocks inland, city residents eat fish noodle soup, and this version is much better.

The dish here is bún cá—clear broth cooked from fish bones, served with hand-pounded then steamed mackerel fish cakes, thin rice noodles, seasonal jellyfish, and a plate of shredded banana blossom with herbs. The fish cake is the key: it is made fresh every morning from whatever fish the boats bring in, and a shop that buys pre-made fish cakes instead of making its own is not worth eating at. Your guide will show you how to tell the difference.

We start at Xóm Mới Market, the city’s local market rather than a tourist market, to eat fish noodle soup and see the fish and fruit stalls. Next comes bánh canh chả cá, a version with thicker tapioca noodles, and bánh căn—small rice cakes grilled in clay molds over charcoal, served with quail eggs, scallion oil, and dipping fish sauce, a specialty of Khánh Hòa.

We finish at Đầm Market, with dried seafood, chè, and coffee.

Small group, maximum 10 guests.
Meeting point:

Xom Moi Market, Ngo Gia Tu Street, Nha Trang

We meet at the Ngo Gia Tu entrance to Xom Moi Market. Your guide will have a small sign with your name. About 10 minutes' walk from the beachfront hotels.

Detailed itinerary

Spot 1 - Xom Moi Market: The locals' vibrant kitchen. Before 9:00 AM, when it's at its liveliest, explore the fresh seafood section, fruit stalls, and delivery boats alongside your guide.
Spot 2 - Bun Ca: A noodle dish featuring a clear broth brewed from fish bones, combined with hand-kneaded steamed and fried mackerel patties, thin rice vermicelli, banana blossoms, and fresh herbs. Your guide will show you how to spot stalls serving homemade fish patties.
Spot 3 - Banh Canh Cha Ca: A similar style dish made with thick tapioca noodles, served with freshly fried and steamed fish cakes and a spicy kick of chili.
Spot 4 - Banh Can: Bite-sized rice flour pancakes cooked in terracotta molds over charcoal, served with quail eggs, scallion oil, and a special dipping sauce. This is a local Khanh Hoa Province specialty rarely found further north.
Spot 5 - Nha Trang-style Banh Mi: The local sandwich. Compared to the northern style, it features less pate and is generously loaded with fish cakes.
Spot 6 - Dam Market: A historic market lined with stalls selling dried seafood, squid, bird's nests, and local sweets. Your guide will show you items that are truly worth buying.
Spot 7 - Che & Ca Phe Sua Da: Wrap up with a traditional sweet dessert soup and iced coffee with condensed milk. You will also receive a guide map featuring recommended spots for an evening food tour.

Other notes

Departs daily at 07:00. Xóm Mới Market is at its best before 9:00, and the fish cakes are made fresh every morning.
Rain and storms: Nha Trang’s rainy season typically lasts from around September to December, and in recent years the coastal area has experienced storms making direct landfall. We monitor conditions and will contact you if your travel date is affected.
Address: Vietnam abolished the district-level administrative system in July 2025, and Khánh Hòa Province now also includes the former Ninh Thuận Province. Street numbers have not changed.
Dietary requirements: please let us know at least 48 hours in advance. This itinerary focuses on fish; a vegetarian version with bánh căn, bánh ướt, chè, and the fruit market can be arranged with advance notice.
The Michelin Guide Vietnam only covers Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang—not Nha Trang.
Approximately 2 km of walking on flat streets.
