Tour description

Behind Jama Masjid, in the lanes of Matia Mahal, Delhi cooks dishes left behind by the Mughal court. This is a meat-loving neighborhood, and it comes alive after sunset, when charcoal grills are lit along the street and smoke gathers beneath the awnings of the shops.

We enjoy seekh kebab, minced goat pressed onto skewers and grilled over charcoal until charred on the outside yet tender inside; burra kebab, goat ribs marinated in yogurt and raw papaya; and korma, goat stewed in a sauce of fried onions, yogurt, and ground cashews, served with khameeri roti, the fermented bread that is part of Mughal culinary heritage.

Your guide will explain what distinguishes Mughlai cuisine from Punjabi cuisine, why the meat here is almost always goat rather than lamb, and the long-running debate over which famous restaurant on this street truly deserves its reputation.

We finish with kulfi—not scooped into balls, but frozen in cone-shaped metal molds and served in slices, stuffed inside a hollowed-out mango or pomegranate at a shop that has been making it since 1908—then walk past the steps of the mosque.

Small group, maximum 8 guests.
Meeting point:

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - Jama Masjid steps: We start below the mosque with your guide on Shah Jahan's Delhi, the Mughal kitchen and how this quarter has changed.
Stop 2 - Seekh kebab: Minced mutton with green chilli and herbs pressed onto flat skewers and grilled over coals, eaten with sliced onion and lime.
Stop 3 - Burra kebab: Mutton chops marinated in yoghurt, raw papaya and spice, grilled slowly over charcoal until they pull off the bone.
Stop 4 - Mutton korma and khameeri roti: Goat simmered in a sauce of browned onion, yoghurt and cashew, with the leavened Mughal bread it is designed to be eaten with.
Stop 5 - Matia Mahal walk: A guided pass along the lane with your guide on the street's restaurants, which ones are worth the reputation and which are not.
Stop 6 - Nihari or paya: Slow-cooked shank or trotter stew, simmered overnight, thickened with wheat flour and finished with ginger and green chilli.
Stop 7 - Stuffed kulfi: Milk reduced for hours, frozen in metal cones and served sliced, or stuffed inside a hollowed mango or pomegranate, at a shop working since 1908.

Other notes

Departs daily at 18:00.
This is a meat-focused food tour. There is no genuinely suitable vegetarian version of Matia Mahal—if you are vegetarian, choose our morning walking tour in Chandni Chowk, which is entirely vegetarian.
Dress code: please cover your shoulders and knees. We walk past and beneath the mosque; we do not enter it during this tour, but the neighborhood is fairly conservative.
Ramadan: during Ramadan, this street becomes one of the finest food experiences in India, with stalls operating from sunset until late at night. We adjust the timing, and it is well worth planning around this occasion—ask us if you are traveling during this period.
A clearance operation targeting encroachments around Jama Masjid continued through 2026, and some stalls were affected. We reconfirm each stop during the week of your tour and always have alternatives available.
Air quality from November through January can reach hazardous levels; we will contact you and offer a refund if this occurs.
Hygiene: we use high-turnover kitchens where meat is grilled to order, provide sealed bottled water, and do not serve ice, raw chutney, or salad.
All travel is on foot, approximately 1.5 km through crowded lanes. Not suitable for wheelchairs.
