Tour description

When the shops in the Old Town close, the food moves onto the sidewalks. This evening walking tour takes you to discover what island residents eat after work: charcoal grills, trays of Southern Thai curry, Muslim roti stalls, and dessert carts that appear at dusk.

We begin with moo hong, pork belly braised with black pepper, garlic, and soy sauce until dark and sticky, a signature Phuket home-style dish. Next comes Southern Thai curry with rice, chosen by pointing from a tray of ten varieties; your guide will warn you that this is Thailand’s spiciest food region for a reason. Then comes grilled seafood—prawns, squid, and whole fish cooked over charcoal and served with a sharp, spicy seafood dipping sauce—followed by a sweet finale: butter-fried roti with condensed milk from a Muslim vendor’s cart, and a bowl of o-aew, Phuket’s own shaved-ice dessert made with banana jelly and red syrup.

Along the way, your guide will explain the Malay and Indian roots of Southern Thai cuisine, why fermented shrimp paste is the soul of the region’s food, and how to specify your spice level so you can truly “survive.”

Small group, maximum 10 guests, walking approximately 1.5 km.
Meeting point:

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - Moo hong: Pork belly stewed with black pepper, garlic and dark soy until sticky and collapsing - the dish Phuket families cook at home and rarely put on tourist menus.
Stop 2 - Southern curry trays: Point-and-eat curry over rice from a tray of ten - fish organ curry, yellow crab curry, turmeric-heavy southern style. Your guide will manage the spice for you.
Stop 3 - O-tao by charcoal: The taro, oyster and egg griddle, cooked at a night stall where the pan has been seasoned for years.
Stop 4 - Grilled seafood: Charcoal prawns, squid and a whole fish with the sharp green seafood sauce, at a pavement grill house with plastic tables.
Stop 5 - Roti from a Muslim cart: Dough slapped, folded and fried in butter, served with condensed milk or with a small bowl of curry - the island's Malay-Muslim inheritance.
Stop 6 - O-aew: Phuket's own dessert, shaved ice over banana jelly with red syrup and beans, from a cart that has been on the same corner for years.

Other notes

Departs daily at 17:00.
Southern Thai cuisine is the spiciest in the country. By default, the guide will order mild spice for the whole group and increase the spice level only if you request it.
Dietary requirements: please let us know at least 48 hours in advance. A pork-free itinerary is easy to arrange here thanks to Phuket’s Muslim community, and a vegetarian itinerary can also be arranged with advance notice.
The Vegetarian Festival, held in the ninth lunar month, usually in late September or October, transforms the entire town for nine days: meat stops being sold, street processions block the roads, and firecrackers go off continuously. It is an extraordinary experience to witness, and we organize a fully vegetarian adjusted version of this tour during the festival—please let us know if you are traveling at that time.
The monsoon season lasts from May to October, with heavy afternoon rain; evenings are usually dry.
Minimum age 10. Approximately 1.5 km of walking on flat terrain.
