Tour description

Puerto Vallarta is a resort town with a genuinely good local food scene, mostly concentrated in the Zona Romantica south of the river, where the streets are narrow, the buildings are low and the taquerias outnumber the bars.

The morning tour is built on fish. Battered fish tacos from a stand that closes when it sells out, finished by you at a salsa bar with a dozen options. Ceviche and aguachile. Pescado zarandeado, a whole fish butterflied, rubbed with chilli and achiote and grilled over wood, which is the great dish of Mexico's Pacific coast and is almost never served anywhere else.

The evening tour is built on pork. Al pastor carved off the trompo at a place where the queue starts at seven, birria and quesabirria, and a raicilla tasting - the Jalisco mountain agave spirit that is older than tequila, was illegal for most of the twentieth century and is now finally being made properly again.

Both versions include a walk along the Malecon and the Rio Cuale market.

Small group, maximum 8 guests, entirely on foot.
Meeting point:

Calle Basilio Badillo at Insurgentes, Zona Romantica, Puerto Vallarta

We meet on Calle Basilio Badillo at the corner of Insurgentes in the Zona Romantica. Your guide will have a small sign with your name.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - Basilio Badillo: A short orientation walk along the Zona Romantica's restaurant street with your guide on how a fishing village became this.
Stop 2 - Battered fish tacos: White fish in a light batter, fried to order, then finished by you at a salsa bar with cabbage, crema and a dozen salsas. Closes when sold out.
Stop 3 - Ceviche and aguachile: Raw fish cured in lime with onion, cucumber and chilli, from a high-turnover counter.
Stop 4 - Rio Cuale market: A walk across the river island market with your guide on local produce, and a stop for birria or a tostada.
Stop 5 - Pescado zarandeado or tacos al pastor: On the morning tour, a butterflied whole fish rubbed with chilli and achiote and grilled over wood. On the evening tour, pork carved off the trompo with pineapple.
Stop 6 - Malecon walk: A stretch of the seafront promenade with the sculptures, and an elote or a raspado from the carts.
Stop 7 - Raicilla tasting: The Jalisco mountain agave spirit that predates tequila and was illegal for most of the last century, tasted alongside a tequila so you can tell the difference.

Other notes

Runs daily, with a morning departure at 10:30 and an evening one at 18:00. The morning tour is fish-led and the evening one is pork-led; they visit different stops and you can do both.
Safety, stated openly: the US State Department rates the state of Jalisco at Level 3, reconsider travel. Puerto Vallarta itself is explicitly outside the restricted zone for US government employees, and state homicides fell sharply through 2026. The practical risk here is petty crime - pickpocketing on a crowded Malecon, bag snatching, taxi overcharging. We use app cars or agreed fares and ask you to keep valuables out of sight. Please read your own government's advice and decide for yourself.
Accessibility: the Zona Romantica's pavements are narrow, uneven and steeply cambered with frequent curb drops. We cannot honestly call this route wheelchair accessible.
Raw seafood: ceviche and aguachile are optional and we use only refrigerated, high-turnover vendors. Tell us if you would rather have everything cooked.
Water: tap water is not drinkable. We provide bottled water.
Cruise days flood the Malecon and Centro; we time departures around the port schedule.
Pacific hurricane season runs mid-May to November, peaking August to October.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead.
About 2.5 km of walking with uneven pavements.
