Tour description

Rio's real food culture is the boteco - a corner bar with marble tables, a tiled floor, a fridge of very cold beer and a short menu of fried things, where you stand, drink a small glass of chope and talk for two hours.

We start in the Centro at a confeitaria that opened in 1894, all Belgian mirrors and jacaranda, for a pastel de nata and a coffee, then a beer hall that has been pouring since 1887 for a bolinho and a chope.

Then Santa Teresa or the Travessa do Comercio depending on the day, for feijoada - black beans cooked with pork, served with rice, farofa, kale and orange - which is a Saturday institution here and a heavy one.

The finish is the reason for the timing. We take a short ride to Urca, the quiet neighbourhood under the Sugarloaf, where a bar with no seating sells bolinhos de bacalhau and cold beer and everybody sits on the seawall with their feet over the water to watch the sun go down behind the city. It is the single best hour in Rio and it costs almost nothing.

Small group, maximum 8 guests, with transport included.
Meeting point:

Confeitaria Colombo, Rua Goncalves Dias, Centro, Rio de Janeiro

We meet outside the Belle Epoque confeitaria on Rua Goncalves Dias in the Centro. Your guide will have a small sign with your name. Metro Carioca or Uruguaiana are a short walk.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - Belle Epoque confeitaria: Pastel de nata and coffee under Belgian mirrors in a tea room opened in 1894, with your guide on imperial Rio.
Stop 2 - Historic beer hall: A bolinho and a chope, very cold, in a beer hall that has been serving since 1887.
Stop 3 - Centro walk: Travessa do Comercio and the colonial lanes, with your guide on the Portuguese court, the port and the city's layers.
Stop 4 - Feijoada: Black beans with pork, served with rice, farofa, sauteed kale and orange. Brazil's national dish, and heavier than you expect.
Stop 5 - Petiscos: Pastel, coxinha and linguica from a boteco counter, with your guide on the etiquette of Brazilian bar snacking.
Stop 6 - Transfer to Urca: A short ride to the quiet neighbourhood under the Sugarloaf, included in the price.
Stop 7 - The Urca seawall: Bolinho de bacalhau and a cold beer or a caipirinha, sitting on the wall with your feet over the water as the sun goes down.

Other notes

Runs daily at 14:00. Feijoada is traditionally a Saturday dish and Saturday is the best day for this tour.
Safety, stated plainly: travel advisories name Copacabana, Ipanema, Lapa and Santa Teresa as areas where theft is concentrated, and the Centro empties out and becomes uncomfortable after about eight in the evening. We run in the afternoon, finish at sunset in Urca, which is one of the safest neighbourhoods in the city, and use pre-arranged transport rather than walking between districts. Keep phones out of sight on the street; your guide will tell you when to take them out.
We do not run favela tours. Travel advisories are explicit about avoiding favelas including organised tours, and we agree.
Water: drink bottled in Rio; we provide it.
Weather: summer, December to March, is 30 to 40 degrees and humid, and we would suggest the winter months from June to August as the best walking season here.
Carnival, in February, effectively closes the city to normal touring for about ten days. We do not run standard tours then.
Minimum age 18 because of the bar stops; private family versions without alcohol are available.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian is workable but feijoada is not, and we will substitute.
About 2 km of walking plus one transfer.
