Tour description

Taiwan is the only place in Asia where Michelin has truly recognized street stalls, and Raohe Street Night Market has three Bib Gourmand spots within its first hundred meters. It is also Taipei’s most ideally designed night market for a tour: a straight, 600-meter-long walkway, with a temple at one end and a train station at the other.

We arrive at 5:30 p.m., when the stalls are beginning to open and before the queues stretch to 40 minutes. First come the pepper buns—pork, scallions, and plenty of black pepper sealed in dough, then pressed against the walls of a tandoor-style clay oven and removed with a blistered, piping-hot crust. Then comes herbal pork rib soup, simmered with Chinese medicinal herbs until the meat falls off the bone—the quintessentially comforting Taiwanese dish. Next is lu wei, where you choose braised items from a tray, which are then chopped and tossed with seasonings.

We continue with oyster vermicelli, stinky tofu for those willing to try it, grilled squid, aiyu jelly with lemon, and finish with a properly prepared cup of bubble milk tea. Your guide will explain the Fujian, Hakka, Japanese, and mainland Chinese influences on Taiwanese cuisine, as well as which famous stalls are now surviving on reputation alone.

Small group, maximum 10 guests, entirely on foot along a single street.
Meeting point:

We meet in front of Ciyou Temple at the western entrance to Raohe Street Night Market, five minutes from Songshan station exit 5 on the green line. Your guide will have a small sign with your name.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - Ciyou Temple: We start at the temple gate with your guide on Taipei's night-market culture and how Michelin came to list street stalls here.
Stop 2 - Fuzhou pepper bun, Bib Gourmand: Pork and spring onion with a heavy hit of black pepper, sealed in dough and baked against the wall of a clay oven. Eaten carefully - the inside is molten.
Stop 3 - Herbal pork rib soup, Bib Gourmand: Ribs simmered with Chinese medicinal herbs until the meat slides off the bone, in a clear, slightly bitter, deeply restorative broth.
Stop 4 - Lu wei, Bib Gourmand: Braised tofu, egg, seaweed and vegetables picked from a tray and chopped to order with chilli and sesame oil.
Stop 5 - Oyster vermicelli and stinky tofu: Thick oyster noodle soup with black vinegar, and deep-fried stinky tofu with pickled cabbage for anyone brave enough. Your guide goes first.
Stop 6 - Grilled squid and pork intestine noodles: Charred squid on a stick and a bowl of the rice noodles Taipei does better than anywhere.
Stop 7 - Aiyu jelly and bubble tea: Cold fig jelly with lemon, and a properly made bubble tea with hand-cooked tapioca, to finish.

Cancellation policy

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. Taipei’s night markets simply do not open on nights with typhoons or very heavy rain—if that happens, we will cancel and issue a full refund or move you to another date.

Other notes

Daily departure at 17:30. We deliberately start early: pepper bun stalls often sell out before 21:00 on weekends, and queues at 20:00 can last 40 minutes.
Tuesday through Thursday is considerably more pleasant than the weekend.
The typhoon season runs approximately from July to October. Vendors do not set up during heavy rain, so we apply a same-day cancellation and rescheduling policy.
Almost every stall accepts cash only; your guide will handle payment during the tour.
During Lunar New Year week, most stalls are closed—let us know if you are traveling then and we will advise you.
Special dietary needs: please let us know at least 48 hours in advance. Taiwan is one of the easiest places in Asia for vegetarians, with a strong Buddhist vegetarian tradition, and we can create a completely vegetarian itinerary if notified in advance.
Entirely on foot, approximately 1.2 km over flat terrain.
