Tour description
Nam Et – Phou Louey National Park in Houaphan Province is one of the most intact forests in Indochina and home to dozens of large mammal species. The night-time tour on the Nam Nern River was developed together with the local community: whenever visitors report seeing wildlife, the villages around the park receive additional rewards, encouraging residents to help protect the forest instead of hunting.
On the first day, a vehicle takes you from Nong Khiaw to Vieng Thong town, where you can soak in hot springs. On the second day, you travel by long-tail boat upstream along the Nam Nern River into the core zone, take a short walk to look for animal tracks, and set up camp in a riverside shelter. After dark, the boat drifts quietly along the river while the guide scans for animals’ eyes with a spotlight – possibly sambar deer, civets, jungle cats, owls, or otters.
The next morning, you listen to gibbons singing, trek with rangers, and then travel downstream on the return journey. This tour offers a genuine nature experience; wildlife sightings are not guaranteed on every trip.

Detailed itinerary
Morning (09:00): The vehicle and guide pick you up in Nong Khiaw and depart for Vieng Thong (approximately 3–4 hours), passing through highland villages.
Noon: Have lunch en route.
Afternoon: Arrive in Vieng Thong, check in, and bathe in the Vieng Thong hot springs. Visit the national park information center.
Evening: Dinner. Overnight in Vieng Thong.

Safety: some rural areas of Laos still contain unexploded ordnance (UXO) from wartime; always stay on marked trails and follow your guide’s instructions.
