Tour description
Banh khot is a small savory pancake made from rice flour and coconut milk, cooked in indented cast-iron molds until the edges are lace-crisp and the center is soft, topped with a whole shrimp and scallion oil, eaten wrapped in mustard greens and herbs, and dipped in sauce. Vung Tau is where this dish is at its best, and locals take it so seriously that four or five eateries are routinely debated.
This tour compares those spots. Riding pillion with a local guide-driver, you cover about six kilometers through the city, eat three or four banh khot at each of four spots, and discuss what sets each apart: the ratio of coconut milk in the batter, whether the molds are fired by wood or gas, fresh shrimp versus dried shrimp, and the presence or absence of mung beans.
The famous spot, nestled under a star apple tree, cooks over wood fires and often sells out by early afternoon. The second is a local favorite charging half the price. The third opens only in the afternoon, so this morning tour visits the ones open at that time.
We finish with a cup of coffee and banh mi xiu, the local-style bread served with gravy and pork meatballs.
Maximum 8 guests, one person per bike.
