Tour description

Busan is a port city and a refugee city - during the Korean War the population doubled with people from the north, and the food still shows it. Jagalchi is the largest seafood market in Korea, run largely by women known as the jagalchi ajumma, and behind it sit two more markets that grew out of post-war trading.

We start at Jagalchi, where your guide negotiates at the tanks with you: flatfish, abalone, sea squirt, scallops, prawns. You choose, agree the total price before anything is killed, and take it upstairs to be sliced raw or grilled. Your guide will explain the cooking and table fees that catch everyone out, and make sure the number is agreed in writing first.

Then BIFF Square for ssiat hotteok - a sweet pancake split open and stuffed with sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and peanuts, invented in Busan - and into Gukje Market's food street for Chungmu gimbap, bibim dangmyeon and patbingsu. We finish with milmyeon, the cold wheat noodle dish that northern refugees created here when buckwheat was unavailable.

Small group, maximum 8 guests, entirely on foot within a ten-minute radius.
Meeting point:

Jagalchi Market main building entrance, Jagalchi station exit 10, Busan

We meet outside the main Jagalchi Market building, a two-minute walk from exit 10 of Jagalchi station on Line 1. Your guide will have a small sign with your name.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1 - Jagalchi Market floor: A walk through Korea's largest seafood market with your guide translating the tanks - flatfish, sea squirt, abalone, live octopus - and explaining the jagalchi ajumma who run it.
Stop 2 - Choose and price your catch: You pick the seafood and your guide agrees the total, including the cooking fee and per-person table charge, before anything is prepared. This is the single most useful thing a guide does in Busan.
Stop 3 - Raw and grilled seafood upstairs: Your catch sliced raw as hoe with chogochujang, or grilled, with side dishes and a shot of soju if you want one.
Stop 4 - Ssiat hotteok, BIFF Square: A sweet pancake fried, split and packed with sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and peanuts - a Busan invention and the best street sweet in Korea.
Stop 5 - Gukje Market food street: Chungmu gimbap with spicy squid, bibim dangmyeon glass noodles and Korean blood sausage, at a food alley that has run for around sixty years.
Stop 6 - Milmyeon: Cold wheat noodles in an icy broth with beef, cucumber and mustard - the dish northern refugees invented in Busan when buckwheat ran out.
Stop 7 - Patbingsu: Shaved ice with red bean, condensed milk and rice cake, with your guide's notes on Busan's other food neighbourhoods.

Cancellation policy

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable, because the seafood is bought on the day. Tours run rain or shine; Jagalchi's main building and the Gukje arcade are both indoors.

Other notes

Runs daily at 11:00, but note two fixed closures that affect the route: Jagalchi closes on the first and third Tuesday of each month, and the Gukje Market food street closes on the first and third Sunday. On those dates we run a modified route and will tell you in advance which stops change.
Seafood is the core of this tour. If you cannot eat seafood, please take a different tour - we cannot meaningfully substitute at a fish market.
Busan takes direct typhoon hits between July and September. Jagalchi's outdoor rows close in heavy weather; the indoor building does not.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead.
Cash is preferred at Gukje and BIFF stalls; your guide handles payment on the tour.
Entirely on foot, about 1.5 km on flat streets.
