Tour description
Pattaya has a reputation that has nothing to do with food, which means the one genuinely excellent food experience in town goes almost entirely unvisited. Lan Po market in Naklua, on the old fishing side of the bay, is where the boats land and where the town's Thai-Chinese families have bought seafood for generations. It runs from dawn and is finished by one in the afternoon.
The system is simple and your guide will walk you through it: you choose live prawns, crab, razor clams or a whole fish at the tanks, negotiate the price by the kilo, then carry it to one of the cook stalls at the back, who will grill, steam with lime and chilli, or stir-fry it with garlic for a small cooking fee. It arrives at your table twenty minutes later. There is no menu and almost no English, which is what a guide is for.
Before the seafood we eat Thai breakfast in the market lanes - rice porridge, pork skewers, coffee poured through a cloth sock - and afterwards we walk through the old Naklua fishing village and the Chinese shrine that predates the resort town by a century.
Small group, maximum 10 guests, entirely on foot.

Detailed itinerary
Stop 1 - Market lanes breakfast: Jok rice porridge with pork meatball and ginger, charcoal pork skewers with sticky rice, and sock-filtered Thai coffee, eaten with the traders.
Stop 2 - The tanks: Your guide walks you through the live tanks - tiger prawns, mantis shrimp, blue crab, razor clams, sea bass - explaining what is in season, what it should cost per kilo and how to tell fresh from held-over.
Stop 3 - Choose and negotiate: You pick the seafood with your guide and settle the price by the kilo, the way local families do.
Stop 4 - Cook-your-catch: We carry it to the cook stalls at the back. Prawns over charcoal, sea bass steamed with lime, chilli and garlic, clams stir-fried with holy basil - cooked while you sit down with a cold drink.
Stop 5 - Som tam and sides: Green papaya salad pounded to order, grilled pork neck and sticky rice to round out the table.
Stop 6 - Naklua fishing village walk: A walk past the drying squid racks and the century-old Chinese shrine that stood here long before Pattaya existed, with mango sticky rice to finish.
