Tour description
In southern Laos, the Mekong River widens to nearly 14 km, forming thousands of islands and sandbanks as the water recedes—the Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands) region. Life on Don Det and Don Khon islands moves at a leisurely pace, with stilt houses, rice fields, hammocks, and sunsets over the river.
You will cycle across the two islands, passing a railway bridge built by the French in the early 20th century and an old locomotive—the remnants of the only railway line ever built in Laos during the colonial period. Next is Li Phi Falls (Tad Somphamit), a series of roaring rapids amid the forest, associated with local folklore about the “ghost-catching falls.”
In the afternoon, a boat will take you between the small islands, followed by a transfer to Khone Phapheng Falls, where the entire volume of the Mekong rushes over rocky rapids with thunderous sound. It is considered the waterfall with the largest flow in Southeast Asia.
