Tour description
Bo-Kaap sits on the slope of Signal Hill above the city, its houses painted in colours that have become the most photographed street scene in South Africa. Behind the paint is a community descended from people brought to the Cape as slaves and political exiles from Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Madagascar from the 1650s onwards, and Cape Malay cooking is what they made here.
We start at a spice shop that has been on Wale Street since 1946 and still blends its own masalas by hand, where your guide takes you through the specific Cape Malay combinations - sweet, aromatic, only mildly hot - and how they differ from Indian ones.
Then we eat. Bobotie, spiced minced meat under a baked egg custard with a bay leaf, which is South Africa's national dish. Denningvleis, a sweet-sour lamb stew with tamarind. Samoosas folded by hand, and daltjies, chilli-and-coriander chickpea fritters. And koeksisters - the Cape Malay version, a spiced doughnut rolled in coconut, not the plaited Afrikaans one, and your guide will explain the difference at length because people here care.
Small group, maximum 8 guests, entirely on foot.

Detailed itinerary
Stop 1 - Spice shop since 1946: Hand-blended Cape Malay masalas, with your guide on the difference between Cape Malay and Indian spicing and why this one is sweet rather than fiery.
Stop 2 - Samoosas and daltjies: Hand-folded samoosas and chilli-and-coriander chickpea fritters, from a corner cafe that has sold them for generations.
Stop 3 - Bo-Kaap streets: A guided walk through the painted houses with your guide on the community's origins, the Group Areas Act, and the gentrification pressure the neighbourhood is under now. We ask before photographing anyone's home.
Stop 4 - Bobotie: Spiced minced meat with dried fruit under a baked egg custard, with yellow rice, chutney and sambals. South Africa's national dish, in the neighbourhood that made it.
Stop 5 - Denningvleis: A sweet-and-sour lamb stew with tamarind, cloves and allspice - the oldest Cape Malay dish still cooked.
Stop 6 - Koeksister: The Cape Malay version, a spiced doughnut rolled in coconut, not the plaited Afrikaans one. The distinction matters here.
Stop 7 - Rooibos or masala tea: A last cup, with your guide's notes on where to eat in Cape Town and how to do a township food experience properly.
Stop 2 - Samoosas and daltjies: Hand-folded samoosas and chilli-and-coriander chickpea fritters, from a corner cafe that has sold them for generations.

Other notes
Runs Monday to Saturday at 10:00. We do not run on Sundays, when much of Bo-Kaap's food trade is closed.
Bo-Kaap is a living residential neighbourhood, not an attraction, and it is under real pressure from over-tourism and property prices. We keep groups to eight, we walk quietly, we ask before photographing people or their houses, and a share of every ticket goes to the businesses we visit.
This is a Muslim neighbourhood. Alcohol is not served on this route and pork is not eaten here. Please dress modestly.
Safety: Bo-Kaap is fine in daylight with a guide. We do not run it after dark.
Load-shedding: South Africa's electricity supply has been stable recently, but we still check the schedule on the morning of every tour and our indoor stops have backup power.
Cape Town tap water is safe to drink, which makes this the easiest food tour in Africa on that front.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian is straightforward via samoosas, daltjies, bean curries and breyani.
About 2 km of walking, some of it steeply uphill on cobbles.
