Tour description
Cape Town's city bowl food is a collision of Cape Malay, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Indian and Portuguese cooking pressed into a few walkable blocks between the mountain and the harbour.
We start with biltong, which is not jerky and your guide will explain why - air-dried, coriander-spiced, cut thick - and droëwors, alongside a look at Greenmarket Square and the old slave lodge.
Then the Gatsby: a foot-long roll split and filled with chips, masala steak or calamari, lettuce and peri-peri sauce, invented in the Cape Flats in the 1970s and designed to be shared between four people. We share one, which is the correct way.
We also eat boerewors, the coriander-spiced farm sausage cooked over wood on a braai, bunny chow, a hollowed loaf filled with curry that came from Durban's Indian community, and a plate of snoek, the Cape's own fish, smoked and served with apricot jam.
We finish with a seated tasting of Cape wines - chenin blanc and pinotage, the grape South Africa invented - and a slice of milk tart.
Small group, maximum 8 guests, entirely on foot.

We meet in Greenmarket Square in the city centre. Your guide will have a small sign with your name.
Detailed itinerary
Stop 1 - Biltong and droëwors: Air-dried beef with coriander and vinegar, cut thick, plus dried sausage. Your guide explains why calling it jerky will not win you friends here.
Stop 2 - Greenmarket Square: A short guided walk through the square and past the old slave lodge, with your guide on the city's founding and what it was built on.
Stop 3 - The Gatsby: A foot-long roll filled with chips, masala steak and peri-peri, invented in the Cape Flats in the 1970s to feed four workers for the price of one. We share one, which is how it is meant to be done.
Stop 4 - Boerewors off the braai: Coriander-spiced farm sausage grilled over wood, with pap and chakalaka, and your guide on why a braai is not a barbecue.
Stop 5 - Bunny chow: A hollowed half-loaf filled with bean or mutton curry, brought to the Cape from Durban's Indian community.
Stop 6 - Smoked snoek: The Cape's own fish, smoked and eaten with apricot jam and bread - an odd-sounding combination that works.
Stop 7 - Cape wine and milk tart: A seated tasting of chenin blanc and pinotage, the grape South Africa created, with a slice of cinnamon-dusted milk tart.

Cancellation policy
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. Tours run rain or shine; Cape Town's winter, roughly June to August, is the wet season.
Other notes
Runs daily at 11:30.
Minimum age 18 because of the wine tasting. We can run a private family version with juice instead - ask us.
Safety: the CBD is fine in daylight and in a group in the early evening on the main streets. We keep phones away in the square, we use e-hailed cars after dark, and we do not walk through the Company's Garden or the Grand Parade after dusk.
On township food tours: we are often asked, and our answer is that we only run them in partnership with a Langa-based operator, with a named host household, a real meal at a community kitchen, a published revenue split and a group of no more than eight. We do not do drive-by photography. Ask us and we will arrange it properly; we will not sell you a poverty tour.
Load-shedding: supply has been stable recently, but we check the schedule on the morning of every tour and our indoor stops have backup power.
Cape Town tap water is safe to drink.
Dietary needs: tell us at least 48 hours ahead. Vegetarian and halal versions are both workable with notice; the Gatsby and bunny chow both have excellent meat-free versions.
About 2.5 km of walking, mostly flat with one gentle climb.
