Tour description
Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar City, is one of Africa’s most captivating places: a maze of UNESCO-recognized coral-stone-paved alleys where African, Arab, Indian, and European cultures have mingled over centuries of spice trading and, sadly, slave trading. On this walking tour, a local guide will take you through the neighborhood’s winding streets and layered history.
You will admire the famous carved wooden doors, stroll through markets scented with spices, and hear stories about sultans, explorers, and the island’s troubled past. Along the way, you will discover the birthplace of a famous musician and the roots of Swahili culture. Mysterious and deeply evocative, Stone Town is a wonderful place to explore on foot.
