Tour description
Hanoi's museums are far more impressive than most visitors expect, but they can be difficult to fully understand without context—the information panels are fairly brief, while the stories behind the exhibits are the most fascinating part. This tour takes you to explore three outstanding museums in one day with a guide.
We begin at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, the finest museum in the country. The indoor exhibition introduces the 54 officially recognized ethnic groups of Vietnam—their clothing, farming tools, rituals, and beliefs. Outside in the gardens are full-size houses brought from every region of the country and reconstructed by members of the communities themselves: a Ba Na communal house with a 19-meter-high roof, an Ê Đê longhouse, a H'Mong house, a Cham house, and a Gia Rai tomb house with carved statues.
After lunch, we head into the city center to visit the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum, housed in a former colonial-era boarding school and home to Đông Sơn bronze artifacts, Buddhist sculptures, lacquer paintings, silk paintings, and works by 20th-century artists who shaped modern Vietnamese art; and finish at the Vietnam Women's Museum, which tells the story of women in family life, at the market, and during the war years.
