Tour description
Hanoi serves its best food before noon. By the time most travelers sit down for lunch, the pho pots on Bat Dan Street have emptied, the banh cuon steamers on Hang Ga Street have been wiped down, and the eel vendors on Hang Dieu have gone home. This morning walking tour is built around that very rhythm.
You will begin at a pho stall run by the same family for three generations and recognized with a Michelin Bib Gourmand — no menus, no English, just a slow-moving line and a bowl of pho handed across the counter. From there, your guide will lead you through the network of trade streets in the northern Old Quarter, where each street still bears the name of the commodity once sold there, stopping to savor steamed rice rolls made right before your eyes, crispy fried eel served with glass noodles, charcoal-grilled pork over cold rice vermicelli, and a banh mi crafted by the hands of one of the city's most famous stalls.
Along the way, your guide will explain what you are eating and why it is eaten at that particular hour: why Northern Vietnamese cuisine is far more restrained than the South, what fish sauce grades actually mean, how a bowl of pho is judged in Hanoi, and which condiments you are expected to leave untouched. We finish at the cafe where egg coffee was invented in 1946, in a narrow room tucked at the end of a single-file corridor, with a cup of the drink that still keeps this city famous.
This is a small-group walking tour limited to 10 guests, and we cover about 2.5 km at a leisurely pace with plenty of seated breaks. Come hungry — this tour replaces both breakfast and lunch.

Detailed itinerary
Stop 1 - Pho Gia Truyen, 49 Bat Dan: A three-generation pho eatery honored with a Michelin Bib Gourmand. You queue up, point to order, and carry your own bowl. Beef pho just as Hanoi connoisseurs appreciate it - clear broth, not piled high with herbs, and not sweet.
Stop 2 - Banh Cuon Gia Truyen, Hang Ga: Paper-thin sheets of rice batter steamed over fabric right before your eyes, rolled with minced pork and wood ear mushrooms, topped with crispy fried shallots, and served with warm dipping sauce.
Stop 3 - Mien Luon, Hang Dieu: Eel fried to a shatteringly crisp texture, served with glass noodles, crispy fried shallots, and a side bowl of fragrant, peppery broth. A dish few tourists find on their own.
Stop 4 - Bun Cha, Hang Manh: Charcoal-grilled pork patties and pork belly in a sweet-and-sour dipping sauce, served with cold rice vermicelli, fresh herbs, and fried crab spring rolls. Hang Manh is the street synonymous with this dish.
Stop 5 - Banh Mi 25, Hang Ca: Hanoi's most famous banh mi stall. A crusty baguette, pork pâté, cold cuts, pickled carrots and daikon, cilantro, and chili - assembled in about forty seconds.
Stop 6 - Dong Xuan Market: Walk through the Old Quarter's largest covered market, with a guide explaining various ingredients - fresh turmeric, betel leaves, fermented shrimp paste, river fish, seasonal fruits - and a sweet dessert soup to sample.
Stop 7 - Giang Cafe, Nguyen Huu Huan: The cafe where egg coffee was born in 1946, still run by the same family. Egg yolks whipped with condensed milk layered over hot Vietnamese coffee, served resting in a bowl of warm water.

Cancellation policy
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time for a full refund. Cancellations made within 24 hours are non-refundable, as food is purchased fresh on the morning of the tour. If you are running late, please message your guide — we can usually help you catch up with the group at stop 2 or 3, but we cannot hold the entire group for more than 15 minutes. The tour runs rain or shine; Hanoi rains are usually brief, and most stops are sheltered. If we cancel for any reason, you will receive a full refund or a free reschedule to another date.
Other notes
Departing daily, two departures (07:30 and 08:30). Pho Gia Truyền typically sells out most mornings, making the 07:30 tour the safer option.
Dietary requirements: please let us know at least 48 hours in advance. Pescatarian and pork-free options can be arranged with substitutions. A fully vegetarian or vegan version of this tour is not practical — most Hanoi broths are made from pork or beef — so we recommend opting for a private tour instead.
Please note that Hanoi sidewalk regulations enforced since 2025 mean that seating at several stalls has moved indoors, and low plastic stools on the street are no longer guaranteed. We confirm seating with each vendor during the week of your tour and keep a backup option prepared for every stop.
We do not visit Hanoi Train Street. Guided tour groups have been banned there since March 2025, and we will not place our guests in that situation — your guide will be happy to explain how to visit on your own.
Please wear comfortable shoes, bring a hat or umbrella depending on the season, and expect to walk about 2.5 km on flat terrain.
